Wounds caused by hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) necessitate special attention during the healing phase. HS abscesses can flow blood and pus, and in severe cases, tunnels beneath the Skin can emerge, connecting many lumps. Your doctor can help drain them if necessary, but having a daily care plan to keep your Wounds super clean is crucial to healing. We’ll give you some pointers to help you get by.

Try not to be too hard on yourself.

Remember that having HS has nothing to do with bad hygiene. (The aetiology of HS is unknown). Which is little comfort when wounds, well, stink. “Malodorous drainage is a unique feature of HS,” Dr Adil explains. While some people with chronic inflammatory skin diseases can conceal their symptoms, any unpleasant-smelling leaking can make concealing HS from others impossible. He notices that exact wound care promotes healing, decreases infections, and eliminates stink.

Allow for a multi-tiered strategy.

The emphasis of at-home HS treatment regimens is on symptom control, which may include doctor-prescribed medications, pain medicines, and some alternative therapies (more on those later). “What people do at home really depends on the severity of the wounds they have,” Dr. Adil says. He highlights the necessity of regular—and gentle—bathing, as well as applying a topical antiseptic (like neem soap) directly to your wounds to limit the amount of bacteria on your skin, which lowers your risks of infection, regardless of the severity of your HS.

Inquire about bleach baths

Microorganisms infest the skin of some persons. If your dermatologist believes you fall into this category, he or she may recommend bleach baths. Dr. Adil recommends taking a bleach bath only if your doctor has given you the go-ahead, and then following the instructions to the letter. Because bleach is a harsh chemical, bleach baths only call for a minimal amount of it, and “if you’re not using it correctly, it can do far more harm than good,” he says. Consult your doctor beforehand if you wish to try this treatment.

Use the best wound dressings

High-quality wound dressings are a vital component of at-home care since they can make or break your quality of life. According to Dr. Adil, certain types of bandages are good at collecting odorous fluids and keeping your clothes dry, which decreases shame. More expensive dressings, such as silver impregnated foam and calcium alginate, are comfortable, very effective, and aid in pain reduction and drainage management if your insurance company will cover it. If your insurance won’t cover the cost, keep reading for some great alternatives.

DIY Dressing Alternatives can Be Considered

Dr Adil recommends utilising sanitary napkins, adult incontinence trousers or infant diapers to make substitute wound dressings because they are made of exceptionally absorbent textiles. “These products are designed to wick moisture away from an area, so they will also protect the healthy skin around it,” he explains. Dressing flexibility is vital since HS affects locations that curve, such as under your arm, beneath your breasts, and in the folds of your groin. He also warns against using gauze in areas where there is a lot of drainage since it might stick to the wound and cause discomfort and stress when peeled off.

Dress Your Wounds in a Way That Is Comfortable for You

Dr. Adil believes that how you apply your dressings is mostly a matter of personal preference. As a mild, non-stinging antibacterial for your wounds, he suggests a teaspoon of white vinegar in warm water. It’s definitely easier to clean your wounds while showering, but you can do it separately if you like. Consider the Hypafix tape, which, according to Dr. Adil, is popular with HS sufferers because it breathes and is gentler on the skin than many medical adhesives.

Use only medical-grade honey, aloe vera, and tea tree oil…

According to Dr. Adil, the primary goal of using topical lotions and ointments on HS wounds is to assist limit the number of bacteria so that the wound heals faster. He is afraid that they will contribute to hair follicle obstruction, particularly if they are all thick—and that non-medical grade tea tree oil will induce clogging. “Honey dressings are popular right now, but there’s zero evidence that they help with HS,” Dr. Adil adds. “It’ll probably just make a mess with dubious benefits.”

…and avoid using petroleum jelly.

Although you may have heard that using petroleum jelly to wounds is useful, according to Dr. Adil, this is not the case. To begin with, trying to apply it to a draining wound will result in failure. Second, to absorb moisture, the absorbent component in your dressing should come into direct contact with the wound. Petroleum jelly, like honey and aloe, is quite thick, and Dr Adil feels that if it gets on the skin around the lesion, it may clog your hair follicles and hasten the inflammatory phase of your disease.

Neem and turmeric for wound care

Neem is a native Indian mahogany tree that has long been used as a natural first aid treatment for wounds and ailments. According to study, neem’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal qualities effectively reduce inflammation, promote skin cell proliferation, and boost collagen synthesis. Ayurvedic practitioners use it to prevent the spread of bacteria, reduce redness and swelling, and relieve pain.

Many people recognised turmeric as a skincare powerhouse because of its high antioxidant capacity, which allows it to reduce wrinkles, fight acne, eliminate dark spots, and do other things. According to study, curcumin, turmeric’s main active ingredient, has antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory characteristics that allow it to cleanse wounds of germs, ease inflammation, stimulate healthy skin cell regeneration, and speed up the overall healing process.

To treat burns and wounds with turmeric, create a paste of turmeric and aloe vera gel and apply it to the injured areas for 10 minutes before rinsing it off.

Alternatively, you can use neem in the following ways. The traditional use of neem is to grind the leaves into a paste. Apply to the skin and let on for 20 minutes before washing with cool water.

Take Excellent Care of Yourself

While you’re ministering to your wounds, don’t forget about the rest of your body—or your mind. Because extra skin folds may irritate your HS wounds, try to move more (even brisk walking every day will help) and eat a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet to shed pounds. To avoid friction and pain, wear loose-fitting clothing wherever possible. “This helps reduce disease activity in some patients,” says the doctor. Dr. Adil adds that smoking is associated with illness progression over time, so do everything you can to quit smoking as well. And don’t give up hope: there are HS treatments that can minimise flares, so there is still hope.
