A Look at the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Issues that Women Face

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

Women are more likely than men to suffer from the inflammatory skin condition Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). Experts aren’t sure why. Your immune system, environment, and lifestyle are all possible contributors.

“Of course, there’s a hormonal factor,” Dr Adil Moulanchikkal, Lead Ayurveda Skin Specialist at EliteAyurveda Clinics, adds. “Women with HS face unique challenges during cyclical events such as menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.”

Here are some things to keep in mind.

Do you experience flare-ups of Hidradenitis Suppurativa during your period?

People frequently tell Dr. Adil that their menstrual flares happen a week before their period starts. This is the time when estrogen and progesterone levels drop. Premenstrual syndrome affects 43% to 77% of menstruating people with HS, according to research. But it’s unclear whether that dip is the trigger.

Many questions remain unanswered. If you have premenstrual symptoms, you have numerous alternatives for controlling your HS symptoms.

“Because there is a hormonal drive to menstrual HS flares, you can’t just treat it with an antibiotic or an immunomodulating or immunosuppressive medication,” adds Dr Adil. “You really need to get to the root of the problem.”

That is where Ayurvedic Medicines come in; the adverse effects of oral birth control pills or anti testosterone tablets, which are commonly prescribed by Allopathic doctors, are completely avoided.

“Androgens are present in everyone, including male hormones like testosterone,” Dr. Adil explains. “At the moment, we believe that blocking these androgens may be beneficial in preventing premenstrual HS flares.”

If you have groin lesions, menstrual pads may be unpleasant. In that instance, Dr. Adil recommends utilizing tampons.

Will My Hidradenitis Suppurativa Change While Pregnant?

It is tough to predict how you will feel. According to research, one in every four patients with HS may have symptom improvement. According to specialists, some people may feel better as a result of the increases in estrogen and progesterone levels that occur during pregnancy.

Throughout pregnancy, however, most women’s disease activity remains steady or worsens. If you have active HS, however, you can and should seek pain and inflammation alleviation.

“Women should not feel compelled to suffer with severe HS during their pregnancy because they are afraid to take anything,” Dr. Adil says.

Certain drugs are not appropriate for pregnant women with HS. Dr. Adil gives the examples of tetracycline antibiotics and oral retinoids. Spironolactone and, of course, hormonal contraception are also options.

Dr. Adil suggests going the herbal route with Ayurveda Medications, which increases the safety of the pregnancy.

Dr. Adil advises against major surgery during pregnancy, although smaller procedures may be preferable. You should see your doctor about what is best for you.

Consider Herbal Ayurvedic Treatment for HS if you want to be safe.

Other factors to consider while pregnant are:

  • Putting on weight. Gaining weight when pregnant is typical. Keep an eye out for areas with severe rubbing or friction.
  • Breastfeeding. Although HS around your breasts can be uncomfortable, it should not impair your baby’s ability to breastfeed. Your doctor may, however, urge you to treat some lesions before giving birth.
  • Delivery method. A vaginal birth may worsen HS in the area of your vulva. Consult your dermatologist and OB/GYN to determine whether a C-section is a better option for you.
  • Depression after childbirth. After pregnancy, HS symptoms become more common. Keep an eye on your lesions and get medical attention if they worsen.

What About Breast and Pelvic Exams?

HS could be present in your breasts, groin, or vulva. Some treatments, such as mammography and Pap tests, can be uncomfortable. If you’re having a flare, it’s reasonable to want to postpone these testing.

First, notify your health care provider about the problem. They may want to begin with your active lesions. However, you should not put off certain health checkups. Your doctor can advise you on how to manage pain before undergoing these treatments.

Is it possible to get rid of Hidradenitis Suppurativa after menopause?

Experts used to believe that if women stopped menstruation, their HS would substantially improve. However, studies show that this is not the case. In truth, the majority of women’s symptoms do not change or worsen following menopause.

Dr. Adil meets patients in their 50s and 60s who are suffering from significant ailments. She also encourages everyone with active HS, whatever of age, to keep seeing their doctor and sticking to their treatment plan.

“At this time, we can say that HS is a chronic disease, and the earlier we treat it, the better,” Dr. Adil says. “I would not recommend that [people] wait to see if the disease will burn out on its own.”

The Relationship Between Hidradenitis Suppurativa and Sexual Health

You may be embarrassed by your symptoms. It is vital, though, that you feel safe in your personal interactions. Increase your sexual health by openly and honestly addressing your HS. If you’re unclear how to continue, consult a mental health professional.

A therapist can teach you how to “make it really clear that these lesions are not contagious,” according to Dr. Adil. “They are not an STD; they are an inflammatory condition.”

If lesions cause discomfort during intercourse, condoms and lubricant may help lessen friction. Finding a good long-term treatment to control your sickness, on the other hand, is the best way to feel well.

“The goal is to minimize the number, severity, and duration of flares,” Dr. Adil adds. “So [people with HS] can live life and have intimate relationships in the way that they want to.”

Hydradenitis Suppurativa is a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha, according to Ayurveda. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down. Because of the disturbance of fat molecules, they begin to accumulate in muscles and obstruct physiological passages, resulting in painful, swelling sores in the groin, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.
