Remedies Beyond Standard Care for HS

Estimated reading time: 0 minutes

If your current therapies aren’t working, consider these suggestions to see if they can assist.

If you have hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic inflammatory ailment that creates painful boils and abscesses beneath the skin, controlling your disease might be a tangled patchwork of ineffective treatments. “No medication is 100% effective for most patients,” says Dr. Adil Moulanchikkal, Lead Ayurveda Specialist at EliteAyurveda. “We may combine one that is 50% effective for some cases with one that is 20% effective for others and another that is 15% effective to get as close to 100 as possible.” Many people, according to Dr. Adil, seek Treatment through alternative and home remedies. But do they work and are they safe? What is the future of Ayurvedic medicines for the treatment of HS? Here’s what you should know.

Check Your Zinc Levels

People with HS have a higher rate of zinc deficiency than those who do not have the illness. “Zinc is an anti-inflammatory nutrient that has been shown to be helpful in reducing HS flares,” he continues, meaning that it helps reduce illness severity. Zinc can actually enhance skin cell immunity, aiding in the treatment and repair of HS irritation. Zinc RDA is 11 milligrammes (mg) per day for men and 9 mg per day for women over the age of 14.

Turmeric is a possibility.

Turmeric is a spice that contains curcumin, an anti-inflammatory compound. While it has not been formally studied in HS, it has been shown to help with other inflammatory autoimmune illnesses. According to one meta-study, consuming 1,000 mg of curcumin daily for eight to twelve weeks decreased arthritic pain and inflammation just as well as NSAIDs. You can get your 1,000 mg daily dose by taking pills or adding five teaspoons of ground turmeric to your food. “Turmeric is generally considered safe,” notes Dr. Adil, “but it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor before beginning any supplement.”

Bathe in Epsom Salt

What is the most popular home remedy? Baths containing Epsom salts. Sixty percent of people with HS attempt magnesium sulphate salt soaks, and many of them swear by them if you spend any time on HS online support sites. There is no conclusive evidence that the salts aid with HS symptoms or relax aching muscles, as they are commonly used for, but Dr. Adil believes they are worth a try. The bath will at the very least soothe you and clean your irritated areas. Fill your tub halfway with warm water and add the amount of salts recommended on the package.

Bathe in bleach.

All of these baths are fantastic! While soaking in bleach may sound unpleasant, the diluted chemical helps minimise skin irritation and bacteria, preventing infection and easing itching. (However, avoid establishing eye contact.) “Bleach baths really do help,” Dr. Adil says, recommending them once or twice a week (but you can take them every day if it helps!). How to Approach It: Dilute a half cup of normal or “unconcentrated” household bleach in a full tub of warm water. Soak in the bath for 5 to 10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with warm tap water and moisturise.

Make use of honey!

Honey has long been used as a natural antibacterial agent in wound healing. Wound care, or the treatment of wounds to prevent infection, is an essential component of HS therapy. Honey absorbs moisture and dehydrates bacteria because it is hygroscopic. Furthermore, contrary to popular perception, the high sugar concentration of honey suppresses germ development.Dr. Adil recommends applying it “directly on open sores as a soothing antimicrobial ointment.” Wrap the area in gauze after that.

Increase the temperature.

Honey isn’t the only natural wound treatment option. Start by applying a damp warm compress to your lesions for about 10 minutes; the heat will draw out pus and lessen inflammation. Next, carefully clean and dry the affected area with a mild antibacterial / neem soap before applying any topical treatments or dressings. According to Dr. Adil, never scrub or pick at the lesions, and avoid using rubbing alcohol because it might cause skin damage. Warm compresses or cold packs (neither directly against the skin) will provide pain relief throughout the day.

Look into Neem, Haridhra.

The Indian ancient system of medicine, Ayurveda, promotes the benefits of many medicinal herbs for wound healing. Scientists seeking novel pharmaceuticals from natural resources are turning to Ayurveda since phyto-medicines are not only cheap but also reasonably safe. Ayurveda classifies many remedies of plant, mineral, and animal origin as Vranaropaka (wound healing agent). Some plants’ wound healing properties have been investigated in various pharmacological models and patients, but the majority of them’s potential remains unexplored.

Some Ayurvedic plants include Vata (Ficus bengalensis Linn.), Durva (Cynodon dactylon Pers. ), Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa Roxb. ), Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia Linn. ), Chandan (Pterocarpus santalinus Linn. f.), Gular (Ficus racemosa Roxb.

For frequent disinfection of sores or lesions, commonly available neem can also be used in the form of commercially accessible soap.

Remove the dairy and brewer’s yeast.

Dairy products can raise insulin levels, which encourages an increase in the synthesis of androgen hormones. Dairy may exacerbate HS flares in some people because elevated androgens have a role in the development of HS illness. Dr. Adil recommends waiting two months before ingesting a lot of dairy. “If your HS flares, you’re one of the people who should avoid dairy.” Brewer’s yeast, which is found in breads, beer, and soy sauce, has been linked to HS flare-ups in certain people. Request an anti-gliadin antibody blood test from your dermatologist, which can identify brewer’s yeast sensitivity.

Contact Other HS Warriors

“Connecting with other people affected by HS can be really powerful,” explains Dr. Adil. “It’s comforting to know that you’re not alone in your struggle, and patients can share treatments and remedies that have worked for them.” “Sometimes patients suggest things that aren’t safe,” he says, such as cutting open lesions (people get desperate for relief and engage in this extremely risky habit), pouring rubbing alcohol through tunnels, and applying undiluted bleach to skin. Make sure that any HS community you join is medically supervised.

Our Prognosis –

Hydradenitis suppurativa is a cause of Kapha and Pitta dosha, according to Ayurveda. When the digestive fire (Agni), or Pitta, is out of equilibrium, the Kapha Dosha becomes vitiated, causing metabolism to slow down. Because of the disturbance of fat molecules, they begin to accumulate in muscles and obstruct physiological passages, resulting in painful, swelling sores in the groin, buttocks, thighs, and armpits.

The goal of hidradenitis suppurativa Treatment in Ayurveda is to restore the body’s natural balance by detoxifying it using effective herbal remedies.

Elite Ayurveda’s treatment for Hidradenitis Suppurativa includes balancing the Kapha and Pitta doshas as well as restoring metabolism harmony. Body detoxification, internal medications to balance doshas, and exterior applications to repair wounds are all part of the treatment.
