Teresa Conroy, mostly misspelled as ‘Conway‘ was Dave Gahan’s second wife who served as a publicist for the husband’s music band Depeche Mode between 1985 to early 2000.

Dave and Teresa had a thing in common: hard drug users. And the only reason Dave gave up his family to move in with Teresa was that he thought with her he would ‘live a very selfish life without being judged’ simply because ‘she was joining in’. He said. 

Dave’s hard drug usage dates back to his youth days of joyriding and graffiti to criminal damage and theft and he always tested positive for hard drugs anytime he was caught which landed him in juvenile court 3 times between 1975 to 1980.

Dave was a heroin addict. He survived four brushes with death which got him the nickname ‘The Cat’ from local paramedics in Los Angeles. 

Though he became sober after his first marriage, meeting Teresa relaunched him into drug abuse, and between 1990 and 1996, Dave had 3 drug-induced near-death attacks with the last one in May 1996 giving him an out-of-body experience.

“All I saw and all I felt at first was complete darkness. I’ve never been in a space that was blacker, and I remember feeling that whatever it was I was doing, it was really wrong. Then the next thing I remember was seeing myself on the floor, on the steps outside my hotel bathroom, and there was a lot of activity going on around me. In some ways, it was very liberating. Then I came to and a cop was handcuffing me. It certainly wasn’t a place I’d like to visit again.” He said. 

It was an overdose on a speedball at the Sunset Marquis Hotel which resulted in stopping his heart for two minutes.

Dave Gahan was born to his father Len Callcott, however, his father didn’t take responsibility as a father which forced his mother to marry Jack Gahan who took care of him and his sister and was more present in their lives.

He joined the band at the time it was called Composition Of Sound but later suggested the name Depeche Mode after coming across a French fashion magazine called Depeche Mode which means hurried fashion.
