Heatwaves!!! Red Alert for Delhi, Punjab and Haryana

Recently, Delhi’s Najafgarh recorded the highest temperature of 47.8 degrees, making it the hottest place for the second time in May. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already alerted the public about the severe heatwave warning for Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana for the upcoming five days. Apart from this location, substantial risks and heatwaves are expected in other states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.

Prompting red alerts, the Delhi government has instructed all private and government schools to observe summer vacation from till 30th June for the Academic Year 2024-25. IMD has raised serious concerns over heat-related illnesses, sunstrokes and damaged eyes due to heat.

IMD reported logged temperatures higher than 45°C for over 11 stations. They warned that there would be more peaks that could soar the temperature to 48°C to 50°C in North India, especially major parts of Delhi NCR, in the upcoming days of May. It is advisable to take good care of your health and remain safe from heatwaves.

Here are some advisories issued by IMD to urge people to remain safe from severe illness:

  • Keep yourself hydrated:  drink plenty of water and energy drinks to compact heatwaves.
  • Wear loose, lightweight, cotton clothes to keep the body cool naturally.
  • Try to stay indoors during the peak summer hours, 10 AM to 7 PM. If you do venture outside, cover yourself completely.
  • Follow skincare like SPF sunscreen and use sun protection accessories like sunglasses, hats, umbrellas, etc.
  • To retain body temperature, occasionally take cool showers, use air conditioning, and block out windows to keep indoor temperatures cool.
  • In case of any health emergency like nausea, vomiting and nose bleeding, immediately seek treatment with a doctor and health experts.
