Back Stretching for Sciatica Relief

Exercise and other back Stretching methods can be useful in helping prevent or alleviating Sciatica and manage lower back pain. It is essential to enter into the back stretching therapy slowly and carefully to eliminate the risk of extra injury while you are doing it. Some doctors do not advise stretching the backbone, because this, like many other reasons, may irritate the sciatic nerve. But a key point for sciatica sufferers is that spinal muscles can benefit from exercises such as stretching.

What is sciatica, where does it come from, and some helpful stretching exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine to relieve pain and prepare yourself for a more active lifestyle.

What is sciatica? – Sciatica is an inflammatory process accompanied by pain caused by compression of the sciatic nerve.

How to treat sciatica?

The pain of sciatica is not pleasant. Luckily, sciatica can be tamed with the right exercises, stretches, and body mechanics adjustments to help push this bear back into its den—from a medical standpoint, the disc is returning to its own space.

However, treatment depends on what is actually going on in your body, which requires a proper individual assessment by a physiotherapist and/or MD. Many factors such as age, medical history, and trauma can help guide treatment choices.

Stretch marks to help relieve pain.

Piriformis stretch

  • 30 second delay 2-3 times a day.
  • The sciatic nerve runs directly under the piriformis muscle, so this is a key stretch for those experiencing sciatica symptoms.
  • Lie on your back with your knees bent.
  • Cross the ankle of the affected side with the opposite knee, forming a “number 4”.
  • Grab your good leg with your hands and gently pull your thigh closer to your chest, creating a stretch in the hip/buttock area of the affected side.

Don’t worry if it’s tight and sore at first – the piriformis muscle can get really tight with sciatica, so relax, breathe, and try to hold the stretch for at least 30 seconds.

Stretching the knee to the opposite shoulder

  • 30 second delay 2-3 times a day.
  • Lying on your back with straight legs, slowly bend the knee of the affected side and bring the knee to your chest.
  • While holding this stretch, pull across your body in the opposite direction to intensify the stretch.

Best stretching therapy for sciatica relief.

Modern methods of physiotherapy perform the normalization of metabolic processes and have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect without any side effects.

In the case of disc sciatica, procedures are performed to restore the intervertebral discs and bring the spine to a normal functional state (without surgery) – Lumbarest therapy. The course of treatment is selected individually and brings a long-term therapeutic effect.
