Churachandpur Medical College in Manipur Struggles to Fill Unoccupied MBBS Seats Amidst Faculty Shortage

Guwahati: In the race for coveted medical college seats, 21 out of 100 MBBS seats at Churachandpur Medical College in Manipur remain unfilled even after the conclusion of the second round of counseling.

With the start of the second MBBS batch scheduled for September 11, the college has managed to attract only three students from the all-India Quota. Notably, a significant 85% of the seats at this medical college are allocated to the state quota.

According to a TOI report, Churachandpur Medical College, the exclusive medical teaching establishment in Manipur's hill regions, witnessed its inauguration in January, graced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Nevertheless, the college now confronts a significant issue. As of Thursday, it operates without regular faculty. Sources reveal that the previously appointed faculty members left due to ethnic conflict that erupted in May. Presently, the college relies on three senior resident doctors, who are not permanent staff, to manage its affairs.

According to sources, eight of the recently enrolled MBBS students come from the hill districts of Manipur. Meanwhile, the others, including the trio representing the all-India quota, have chosen to pursue their education through alternative means at Imphal's Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.

Notably, a large portion of the 76 students from the state quota, which includes those from the valley and Naga-inhabited districts, are favoring the option offered by the National Medical Commission. It's important to mention that the first MBBS batch saw its enrollment swell to 32 students last year, largely attributed to students from the hill districts transferring from medical colleges in the Imphal valley, possibly due to ethnic tensions. However, these students are now facing challenges due to a lack of faculty and fully operational facilities, as per sources.
