Why and Why Not Hotel Management as a Career option .

After 12th many students decides to go for Hotel Management as a career option as it sounds unique and different also entrance in this field is comparatively easier. But I have seen many students dropping this course just in a year or two also many students after successfully completing the course chooses entirely different jobs. I was very surprised in one of my trip to Oberois Jaipur Rajvillas when I asked about the perks and benefits of employees the waiter told me that his package is just Rs 3 Lacs per annum the waiter was graduated from one of the top IIHM of India and was working in oberois from last 4 years. However he told me that career in in this industry requires patience and getting good hikes takes some time. Well after doing a bit research I’m mentioning pros and cons of this career option so that students can think before joining the course.

Why you should go for Hotel Management ?

1 –   Opportunities – When working in a prestigious hotel, you’ll face interaction with many different people and refined individuals from all over the world including celebrities, politicians, actors, musicians & so on; thus gaining many better opportunities to level up in your career.

2 –   Privileged life, high salary after certain time & trips to amazing places are a few of the many perks if you can get into 5-star chains such as Ritz Carlton, Marriott, Mandarin Oriental, etc.

3 –   Tips – Who knows you may also geta chance to serve celebrity like Jhonny Dep, Guests gives very high tips when excellent service provided. Sometimes earnings through tips could be much greater then the salary.

4 –   Hotel Management also branches out into other areas such as-

  • Airline Catering (flight kitchen) and Cabin Services – All airlines require flight kitchens in every airplane, along with cabin services. With a Hotel Management degree or diploma, with some experience, one may enter the airline catering services and earn a lot there.
  • Club Management – All clubs often hold meetings and banquets which require organizers with a background in Hotel Management.
  • Cruise Ship Hotel Management – This is one of the most lucrative jobs. Cruise ships are famous due to their services, and hospitality and they require professionals for the job. Thus, with Hotel Management experience, one may join cruise ships. There in addition to the job perks, they might also enjoy hefty tips from passengers!
  • Hospital Administration and Catering – Hospitals are always flooded with people. To manage things there along with the delicate meals for patients and food services for other visitors and proper overall maintenance; it is crucial that hospitals employ experts in Hotel Management.
  • Hotel and Tourism Associations (e.g.- State Tourism Development Corporations) – Tourism Associations need to employ or take the aid of Hotel Management personnel to increase tourism and to make things pleasant for tourists.
  • Hospitality Services in the Indian Navy – Navy demands top culinary skills and hygienic service for its warriors. With a good base in Hotel Management, you can serve in the Indian Navy.
  • Hospitality service MNCs – There are many hospitality companies that a Hotel Management professional may join for a great career. From lodging to food and drinks service, event planning, travel, etc, these MNCs have many services to offer to their customers and they require responsible people professing in Hotel Management.
  • Guest Houses & Resorts – These are the places where the tourists and guests rest. Guest houses and resorts require experienced hoteliers to take charge of managing the influx of the tourists & providing them good service.
  • Kitchen Management (in hotels or canteens in college, schools, factories, company guest houses, etc.) – These are places for hefty earnings and are an opportunity in themselves.
  • Govt Services – Catering departments of railways, banks, armed forces, shipping companies, etc.
  • Hotel and catering institutes – All hotels and catering institutes naturally rely on the experienced staff trained in the ways of Hotel Management to impart their knowledge and skills to the students. One may lead a successful life as a faculty there.

Why you should not go for Hotel Management:

1 –   Long working hours– Although very rewarding, the hotel industry is characterized by early starts and late finishes. You’ll have to put in long working hours no matter your role.

2 –   Labor Intensive field– One cannot be laid back and do a desk job in this business. One needs to often fold their sleeves and work up a sweat.

3 –   No offs on festivals – Unfortunately, if you’re working in this line, you’ll most likely never get festive holidays because that’s the peak time for business.

4 –  Stressful – The more work, the more stress. Plus having to deal with numerous people repeatedly may get overbearing. You’ll have to increase your mental fortitude to cope.

5 –   Very sensitive to economic up and down swings– The economy directly controls the profit and loss in this industry. If the economy is suffering, so will the business, and workers may have to face delayed salaries.

6 –   Limited skill variety growth- Hoteling leaves very little scope for becoming an all-rounder, except in depression /recession periods, when multitasking is inevitable, to remain viable. You usually have to stick to your role and work hard in it.

7 –   Getting into the industry can be easy, some do not even require staff members to have a background in hospitality. However, it can also be just as difficult to break through the top.

8 –   High standards and tight deadlines- The hospitality sector is all about doing everything possible to make sure that the customer is satisfied. The clients can be demanding and so can be the management.

9 –   Very little hope of promotion to Manager level.

10 – Needs to work hard, No day-offs on National Holidays. When Half of the world celebrates, you’d have to work.
