Simple Home Remedies For Loose Motion

Stools which are more watery that is contains more amount of water than in normal state and have foul or strong smell, are termed as loose Motions. These stools are mostly light yellow in colour. Loose Motion is a common issue that everyone faces at some point of time and include symptoms like bloating, cramps and pain in the abdomen, besides, loose bowels and watery stool.

Difference between Diarrhoea and Loose Motions

We often get confused between loose motions and Diarrhoea. Though they almost have same symptoms, there is a difference between the two. Loose motion is a condition that occurs due to indigestion and when food is not properly absorbed by large intestine. This results in watery stool with foul smell. Most of the times, it is a temporary condition and gets resolved by itself without any treatment.

On the other hand, diarrhoea though involves frequent intestinal evacuations along with loose watery stools, cramps and pains, what differentiates it from normal loose motion is the frequency of bowel movements. If there is loose motions three or more times a day, it is referred to as diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is the frequent passage of watery or loose stools across irregular intervals and is experienced by all age groups – from infants to elderly. This happens because food is passed through the body without proper digestion. Possible causes of diarrhoea include food poisoning, infections, allergies, and stress.

Diarrhoea may be mild or life threatening and is indicative of medical conditions such as IBS, bile acid mal absorption, celiac disease, dumping syndrome, etc.

Loose motion occurs when your gut loses its good bacteria due to changes in the diet or an ill-timed antibiotic treatment. Most of the time, loose motions or diarrhoea do not cause serious problem and can be treated at home with over-the-counter medicines and /or with simple home remedies.

There are several home remedies that are quite effective for treating loose motions at home. These include:

Yoghurt: Yoghurt is considered as one of the best home remedies for loose motions. Rich in probiotic that promote good gut health yoghurt helps prevent loose motion.

Rice along with Yogurt and Ghee: With warm yoghurt, mix some rice and ghee. This home remedy will help you relieve loose motion.

Bananas, Ghee, Nutmeg, and Cardamom: Mash bananas into a paste and then add half a tablespoon of ghee to it. This mixture, along with a dash of nutmeg and cardamom powder, if consumed twice a day, can give you relief from loose motion.

Lemon Juice: Enriched with anti-inflammatory properties, lemon makes one of the best medicines for loose motion. It has a soothing effect, rehydrates your body, and relieves intestinal pain. Lemon juice combined with water with a pinch of salt, coriander powder, and mint serves as a good remedy for loose motion.

Salt-Sugar solution: Loose motions results in excessive fluid loss and dehydration. A homemade oral rehydration solution of salt-sugar solution can be sipped throughout the day to treat dehydration and help to recover from weakness because of loose motion.

Fennel and Ginger Powder: Fennel and ginger powder are really effective in relieving loose motion and diarrhoea.

Pomegranate: With anti-inflammatory properties, pomegranates are one of the most effective home remedies for an upset stomach and loose motions.

Fenugreek Seeds: Fenugreek seeds are a popular home treatment for loose motion and abdominal discomfort; because of their antibacterial and antifungal properties. Take 1-2 teaspoons of dried fenugreek seeds and powder them. This powder is to be mixed in a glass of water and should be consumed for 3-4 days in the morning on an empty stomach. This would relieve the discomfort and pain caused by loose motion.

Drink Black Tea with Lemon Juice, and Cardamom or Nutmeg: A cup of strong black tea added with lemon juice and some freshly grounded cardamom or nutmeg helps treat diarrhoea and loose motion.

Apple, Nutmeg, Cardamom, and Ghee: Apple has several health benefits. Cook an apple in ghee. You can add nutmeg and cardamom to it. Consume it to keep loose motion away.

Honey: For ages honey is been used as a natural medicine to treat loose motion. A teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of cinnamon, well mixed in a glass of warm water if consumed in the morning on an empty stomach treats loose motion effectively.

Sago: Another effective home remedy for treating loose motions along with improving digestion is sago. A handful of sago, soaked in water for 3 hours and strained, and then consumed can provide quick relief from stomach pain which happens due to loose motions.

Cumin Seeds: Sometimes, consuming tea mixed with cumin seeds improves digestion and helps treat loose motion.

Ghee, Ginger, and Sugar are the perfect solution: With a small amount of ghee add some grated ginger, powdered nutmeg, and natural sugar. Mix well and have this mixture twice or thrice a day to get relief from loose motion.

Bananas: Bananas, high in potassium and pectin work very effectively to improve bowel movements and is one of the best foods for loose motion. Bananas also help replenish the lost salts of your body.

Mustard Seeds: Mustard seeds, because of its antibacterial property can be good to treat loose motion. Consuming 1/4th teaspoon of mustard seeds that have been soaked in a tablespoon of water for an hour proves to be effective treatment to cure loose motion and can be repeated 2-3 times a day.

Conclusion:

Loose motions are not acute and generally get resolved quite soon. But if the symptoms continue to get worse and last for more than 2-3 days, they may indicate a more serious medical condition. If you experience chronic loose motions, blood in stools, tar-like stools, severe dehydration along with sudden weight loss, fainting, chills, fever, etc. you should visit the doctor at the earliest for proper consultation, diagnosis and treatment.
