All about Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

What is NAFLD?

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a condition in which fat builds up in your liver. Two types of Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are “simple fatty liver” and “nonalcoholic steatohepatitis” (NASH). “Simple fatty liver”, also called “nonalcoholic fatty liver” (NAFL), is a form of “Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease” (NAFLD) in which you have fat in your liver but little or no inflammation or liver cell damage. The simple fatty liver typically does not progress to cause liver damage or complications. “Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis” (NASH) is a form of Nafld in which you have inflammation and liver cell damage, in addition to fat in your liver. Inflammation and liver cell damage can cause fibrosis, or scarring, of the liver. NASH may lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

Stages of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD):

NAFLD develops in 4 main stages. The main stages of NAFLD are:

  1. Simple fatty liver (steatosis) – a largely harmless build-up of fat in the liver cells that may only be diagnosed during tests carried out for another reason
  2. Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)– a more serious form of NAFLD, where the liver has become inflamed
  3. Fibrosis– where persistent inflammation causes scar tissue around the liver and nearby blood vessels, but the liver is still able to function normally
  4. Cirrhosis– the most severe stage, occurring after years of inflammation, where the liver shrinks and becomes scarred and lumpy; this damage is permanent and can lead to liver failure (where your liver stops working properly) and liver cancer

It can take years for fibrosis or cirrhosis to develop. It’s important to make lifestyle changes to prevent the condition from getting worse.

Symptoms:

Sometimes, if you have non-alcoholic related steatohepatitis (NASH) or fibrosis, which are later stages of NAFLD, you may experience:

  • Discomfort in the top right of your belly (where your liver is)
  • Tiredness
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Weakness

How NAFLD is diagnosed?

At kaizen Gastro Care, our expert Dr. Vikrant Kale is typically diagnosed with NAFLD Condition with the help of below tests:

  • Blood Test: a blood test finds higher-than-normal levels of liver enzymes. A standard blood test could reveal this result. High levels of liver enzymes could also suggest other liver diseases.
  • FibroScan: NAFLD is diagnosed with ultrasound or other scans and different liver disorders need to be excluded. The severity of fibrosis can be assessed with Fibroscan.
