Composite Bonding in London

Composite Bonding is a fast, safe, and cost-effective way to address a number of cosmetic and general dental concerns. However, cost-effective is, at times, misinterpreted as “ineffective” or “cheap’ when in fact, composite bonding is neither. This simple and minimally invasive restorative option can create highly natural-looking results and is actually quite resilient.

Composite bonding is made of a composite resin that is shaded to match neighbouring teeth in colour. When used for tooth whitening, bonding will be lightened, but the colouring will remain consistent with natural-looking results. Composite bonding is not characteristically used for whitening alone, but this benefit is easy to add when discoloration is present. During your consultation with one of our experienced cosmetic dentist the ways dental bonding can be used to improve your smile will be discussed fully.

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding is the application of a composite resin to the edge of a tooth that might be, decayed, cracked, chipped or worn down in some way. It is referred to as ‘bonding’ because the composite material bonds to the original tooth.

What does composite bonding look like?

Composite bonding is intended to look as much like a natural tooth as possible. The resin will be tooth-coloured in appearance and can be moulded and polished to match the teeth surrounding it. Composite bonding is used to change the shape of a tooth that you may not like or perfect the edges of worn teeth. Moreover, it can also be used to close the gaps between teeth. Composite bonding is known to be one of the most affordable cosmetic treatments and usually requires no drilling to the existing tooth.

What happens during the treatment?

There is usually no preparation required for composite bonding and the treatment can be done in one appointment.

Composite material cannot change colour, therefore if you are thinking of whitening your teeth, we recommend doing that first and then matching the composite to your new whiter shade. We will carefully plan out your new smile with as much input from yourself as possible and take a number of photographs.

The process involves applying a cleaning gel to the teeth (etch), before applying the bond (glue). We then apply the composite and shape it to the desired shape and size before polishing it to perfection.

You should avoid drinking or eating anything that can cause dark stains such as coffee, tea and red wine for up to 2 weeks after having your composite bonding treatment and thereafter. If looked after well, composite bonding can last between 5-7 years and is easy to replace when needed.

Composite bonding does have a few disadvantages. Mainly, I cannot hide as much damage as porcelain veneers. Bonding can end up looking fake when trying to cover a wide gap, and it can be difficult to neatly hide extensive dental damage. Since porcelain veneers slide over the teeth, they are a better choice for big gaps and severe damage.

Furthermore, composite bonding is usually not as long-lasting as porcelain veneers. While it could last for 7+ years with brilliant care, even chewing on pens or biting your nails can cause bonding to weaken. Luckily, if your bonding breaks or chips, it is generally quick and inexpensive to repair.

While bonding can help you create a highly aesthetic and seamless blend with your existing teeth, the material used- resin simply does not match the translucence and sheen of natural teeth. If it is important for your teeth to be perfectly straight, white and of the highest aesthetic quality, you may prefer dental veneers.

Ultimately, no single dental procedure is right for everyone. If you are after that really perfect Hollywood smile, or you think you have extensive damage, porcelain veneers may be a better choice. However, if you are looking for a fast and cheaper option to dramatically improve your smile, composite bonding might be right for you. At Whites Dental, we will assess the current state of your teeth, along with your treatment goals, and help you decide which is the best choice for you.
