How to Promote Your WordPress Blog: 7 New Strategies

When you have a WordPress blog, the question isn’t how can you promote it. But how can you promote it most effectively? In this article, you learn 7 strategies that will help you promote your WordPress blog more effectively.

Promote Your WordPress Blog Using Tools

CoSchedule – This is one of my favorite tools for ensuring my posts are promoted to my audience other than just the day they publish. I can set up future Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Pinterest posts from within my WordPress dashboard. This is a paid tool, but at only $10 per month, it’s well worth the investment.

Best of Page – Every blog should have a “Must Read” page. This page includes your most popular and most recommended posts. This is a one-stop shop showcasing the type of high-quality information your site has to offer. It can also serve as a reference should you be asked by an advertiser for samples of your work.

Related Posts Plugin – At the bottom of most blog posts these days you will see a list of recommended posts that relate to the topic you just read. Several free WordPress plugins will do this for you. Jetpack happens to be my favorite as it also offers so many other useful and necessary features for bloggers.

Popular Posts Widget – Also included in Jetpack’s feature list is a Popular Posts Widget. This widget uses your daily blog stats to show visitors what other people are reading on your site. This is a simple yet appealing sidebar widget that can also be used to list recent posts and recent comments.

Promote It Manually

Update Your Favorite Older Posts with a New Pinnable Image – Who said you can only Pin your post once? When you publish a great post I highly recommend going back a month or two later and repining it either to one of your boards or t Group Board. Pingroupie is a great site for uncovering Group Boards to join.

Republish It – (Warning: Do not attempt this if your permalinks include the date.) When you have an older post that deals with a trending topic or is gaining traction on its own, consider bringing it back to the homepage. To do this you simply need to go to your Post Editor and change the date to today’s date. Everything will remain the same from a technical standpoint (provided you do not change the URL, please don’t), but readers visiting the homepage and those subscribed to your RSS feed will now have the opportunity to read a post they may have missed.

Internal Linking – Though it is something I am always working on, you should always link to older posts within new content when appropriate. If it is relevant, give readers a link to read more.

What About Promote Old Post Plugins?

I do use Revive Old Post on one of my blogs but it is only because all of the content is evergreen, meaning it is just as relevant today as it was three years ago when I published the post. This doesn’t work for all blogs, and not all posts, especially on personal blogs, are worthy of promotion. Why risk is your reputation bringing new eyes to an out-of-date or no longer accurate article?

Only use a promote-old-post plugin if you can put strong filters in place and ensure only the best representations of your work are being sent out.

Check your stats on a weekly or monthly basis to see what’s trending within your content. If a post is garnering attention on its own you can likely add to that traffic by marketing it to your followers again as well.
