How To Cook a Delicious Pot Roast in The Slow Cooker

Learn how to cook a delicious pot roast in the slow cooker using this very simple crock pot roast recipe.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 3-pound boneless chuck roast
  • 4 Potatoes, cut into wedges
  • 1 cup baby carrots
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 1 cup Peas (optional – I add these mostly because my kids love them!)
  • 3-4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup of red or white wine (Merlot or White Zinfandel both work fine)
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • Seasonings: Salt, Pepper, and others to taste

Recipe Directions

  1. Combine pot roast, onions, carrots, garlic, olive oil, seasonings, and wine in your slow cooker.
  2. Cook for 6 hours on low heat.

Pot Roast Crock Pot Cooking Tips

If you want to make sure that your pot roast turns out perfectly in the crockpot, here are some tips to remember:

1. Optional Marinating & Browning: If you have the time, you may wish to marinate the pot roast with your favorite dry rub of seasonings, such as salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano for 2-3 hours before cooking, and then brown the meat on the stovetop (about 2-3 minutes each side). This is completely optional and will add to the flavor.

Avoid Too Much or Too Little Liquid This pot roast does not call for a lot of liquid

While it will be very tempting to add water, remember that the meat will add its own juice as it cooks down – adding water may turn this into a soup! If you are worried about the pot roast running out of liquid, just keep an eye on it – if you notice it has been cooking for a while and most of the liquid is gone then by all means add a little more. Because crockpot sizes and temperature vary, as well as pot roast sizes and the type of meat cuts and how marbleized they are, we cannot guarantee that 1/2 cup of wine is the right amount of liquid, but it should be a good start.

How to Make Gravy

After the pot roast is finished cooking, you can remove the roast and vegetables from the pan and mix 1 cup of liquid with 1-2 teaspoons of corn starch or flour (use corn starch to make this gluten-free). Another option is to bring the remaining liquid to a slow rolling boil on your stovetop to carmelize and cook down, but this requires vigilant stirring to ensure it does not burn.
