Recipe Directions

1. 12-24 hours before cooking, you will want to rub the ribs with the dry rib rub and allow them to marinate in the refrigerator. I generally will do this the night before cooking ribs. Be sure that the membrane of the ribs has been cut off – many times your butcher can do this for you if you are not sure. The dry rub includes:1 a tablespoon paprika, 2 teaspoons light brown sugar, 1 teaspoon celery seed, 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt, 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard, 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1 teaspoon chili powder.

2. When you are ready to cook, bring the ribs out of the refrigerator to bring them to room temperature while you prepare the sauce. Mix together ketchup, cider vinegar, brown sugar, cayenne pepper, and minced garlic.

3. Place ribs in the slow cooker, cutting them into smaller pieces if necessary to fit.

4. Cover ribs with sauce

5. Cover and slow cook for 6-8 hours on low.

Additional Notes

There are probably hundreds of variations for rib rubs and barbecue sauce. If you marinate the ribs in advance with the dry rib rub and use your favorite sauce, you can’t go wrong with this method if you won’t fall off the bone tender ribs.

Because meat cuts and weights can vary size-wise, you should make sure that you use enough sauce to evenly coat all of the ribs and at least 1/4 of an inch of sauce on the bottom. Depending on how many ribs you are making, you may need to use additional sauces and seasonings.

For a grilled flavor, you may wish to experiment using liquid smoke.
