I remember when I was growing up my mother had a difficult time getting me to brush my teeth as I and mint never quite saw eye to eye or at least tooth to paste. 6 Ways to Improve Your Oral Health You can only brush and floss so much. So what else can you do to improve your oral health? Check out these 6 ways to improve your oral health.

oral hygiene tip#1

Brushing Before Bed

Dentists have discussed the merits of trying to brush your teeth three times a day, however for most people, they usually only manage once in the morning and once before bed. What most people may not realize is that brushing before bed is more important than brushing in the morning. When we sleep, most people develop a dry mouth and the lack of saliva encourages bacteria growth, so brushing before bed gives you protection for up to eight hours.

Timing

Recent studies believe that the average adult only spends about 40 seconds brushing their teeth in each sitting. This is nowhere near enough time to give your mouth a decent clean. You should be spending between two and three minutes on getting your mouth nice and minty fresh. If you find it difficult gauging how long you have been brushing for, why not time it or get a clock for your bathroom.

The harder you brush, the cleaner your teeth will be, right? Wrong. When brushing your teeth vigorously you are more likely to scratch the enamel on your teeth and bruise your gums. Brushing your teeth only using light pressure is a lot better for your teeth and is more successful at removing bacteria, the key is to not just brush your teeth but your gums and tongue as well.

Using The Right Brush

You can get different brushes with varying levels of bristle strength from soft to firm and it’s important to use the right kind for your mouth. If you’re using a firm toothbrush and it’s making your mouth bleed, it’s probably too hard for your mouth. It is also important to replace your toothbrush roughly every three months as the bristles become softer over time and the spacing changes making it more difficult to reach all areas of the mouth.

Don’t Brush After Eating

Common thinking leads some people to believe that brushing their teeth right after eating is the best way to protect their mouth from bacteria. When you eat, the acid in food can result in your enamel taking on a weakened state temporarily. Brushing your teeth during this period can result in damaging your teeth. If you want to brush, it is best to wait about half an hour after eating or you can rinse your mouth with water to clean off any excess food and liquids.

oral hygiene tip#6

Brushing Alone Is Not Enough

Brushing your teeth is a very important part of any dental care routine and oral hygiene, however, it is not the only thing you should be doing. Brushing alone is not going to get rid of all the bacteria in your mouth, especially those hard-to-reach spots. It is important to also include rinsing your mouth with mouthwash and using dental floss as part of your routine regularly. Regular trips to the dentist are also important to make sure that your teeth and gums are in good condition, as well as treat any problems you have that you may not have been aware of.
