How to Use a Slow Cooker Crock Pot

Do You Know How to Use a Slow Cooker Crock Pot? Slow cookers are simple and easy enough to use, but if you are new to the world of crock pots and slow cooking, it can be quite daunting at first to understand how exactly it works and what you should do with them.

Thankfully, it is very straightforward and simple. Most slow cookers also come with very detailed care and use instructions, so that should always be the first place to check. Crockpots can vary based on manufacturer and model, so it is very important to read the instruction manual that came with your slow cooker! Some as a bonus even include recipes, so it is always worth trying out.

The first step to take when you take your slow cooker out of the box is to clean it thoroughly.

Slow cookers generally have these parts:

A metal base that plugs into the wall and has control setting buttons – does NOT let this part get wet or submerge in water – it has wiring and a heating element!

A stone or ceramic pot: This is where you will be placing the food and ingredients for your recipe. The pot is placed inside the metal base. Most slow cooker pots should be washed by hand with warm soapy waters – consult the instruction manual and follow all manufacturer specifications for cleaning and caring for your slow cooker.

A Lid: We generally recommend a see-through glass lid so you can check food while it is cooking without opening the lid, but some models may not have this option. Lids can generally be cleaned with warm soapy water also. Check your instruction manual!

Once you take the time to familiarize yourself with the crockpot, you are ready to get started cooking!

Choose the Right Recipe

If this is your first time cooking with a crockpot, you need a good recipe to start with! I recommend for your very first slow cooker dish something extremely easy and simple and practically fail-proof. If you experiment too much when you first get started and do not like the results, it will discourage you from trying new and different things later down the road. Also, because slow cooker temperatures and sizes can vary, this will help you get a good idea of how well your slow cooker handles things such as liquids and what the best temperature/setting for cooking is.

Good starting dishes are beef stew, sauerkraut and kielbasa, soups, and chilis.
