Linen is a lovely natural fabric much used for good quality spring and summer clothes. Unfortunately, beautiful as it is, linen is not an easy-care fabric so certain caution needs to be exercised both to keep your clothes looking tip-top and also to avoid damaging or spoiling them.

Unlike cotton and various synthetic fabrics, linen does not take kindly to punishment in a washing machine. Linen can generally be machine washed but never at a high temperature. To avoid damage to the fabric, select a warm or cool water wash on your machine. In addition, linen should generally be dried naturally, not in a machine dryer.

If in doubt, hand washing might be a safer option than a machine but use cold or lukewarm water, not hot water. If possible, use a gentle handwashing liquid, not a harsh detergent. Avoid too much rubbing and squeezing as this may hurt the shape of garments.

How To Clean Linen clothes, on the other hand, some linen items, such as fine linen suits, should not be washed by any method but instead dry cleaned. The best tip is always to read the label on garments and follow the laundering instructions given there.

One tiresome aspect of linen is that it tends to crease and wrinkle very easily as compared to cotton and synthetics. If you have washed a linen shirt or other garment, either in a machine or by hand, you will almost certainly find it needs ironing before you can wear it. This is best carried out when the clothing is still quite damp. A hot iron, used carefully, will not harm linen but will be much more effective in removing creases if the clothing is damp rather than stone dry. Creases in dry linen clothing will be stubborn and resistant to the iron, and will almost certainly require the application of steam to remove them.
