SMILE Laser Treatment: A step forward for happier vision
SMILE Eye Surgery

Among the most chosen refractive surgeries, SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) has been hugely popular among people across the globe to correct near-sightedness and astigmatism. The procedure involves using a laser to create a small, thin lens-shaped piece of tissue, called a lenticule, within the cornea. The lenticule is then removed through a small incision, which can be as small as 2-4mm, without removing any corneal tissue.

During the SMILE procedure, the laser is used to correct refractive errors in the cornea. This can help to enhance vision and eliminate or decrease the use of glasses. Unlike other laser vision correction surgeries, such as LASIK, SMILE does not require the creation of a corneal flap, which can reduce the danger of future complications and speed up the recovery time.

SMILE is a safe and effective procedure recognized by the statutory body, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in 2016. However, as with any surgery, there are some risks and complications, including dry eyes, halos, glare, overcorrection, or under-correction of the refractive error.

SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) eye surgery is a highly preferred refractive surgery that uses a laser to restructure the cornea and correct vision problems such as myopia and near-sightedness, and astigmatism.

SMILE surgery has some potential advantages over other types of refractive surgery, such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). One advantage is that SMILE is a minimally invasive procedure that requires only a tiny incision in the cornea, compared to LASIK and PRK, which both require larger incisions.

Another advantage of SMILE is that it may have a lower risk of certain complications, such as dry eye syndrome and corneal ecstasy (a rare but severe complication that can cause vision loss). Additionally, SMILE may be better suited for people with thinner corneas or other eye conditions that make them poor candidates for LASIK or PRK. After SMILE surgery, there are several post-surgical precautions and recommendations that patients should follow to ensure the best possible outcome and reduce the risk of complications. These could be the most notable ones:

  • Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes for several days after surgery.
  • Use prescribed eye drops as directed by your doctor to promote healing and prevent infection.
  • Avoid strenuous exercises for several days after surgery.
  • Avoid swimming or using hot tubs for at least one week after surgery.
  • Wear protective eye shields at night to prevent accidental rubbing or pressure on the eyes while sleeping.
  • Avoid wearing eye makeup or applying lotions or creams around the eyes for at least one week after surgery.
  • Avoid driving until your vision has stabilized and you feel comfortable behind the wheel.
  • Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your eye surgeon to monitor your healing progress and address concerns.

Following these post-surgical precautions and any additional recommendations your eye surgeon provides is vital to ensure a successful recovery and optimal results.
