Ashley Graham’s Transformative Undercover Boss Experience

Ashley Graham went undercover to see what it really takes to make it in the cutthroat fashion industry. While posing as aspiring curvy model Morgan Williams, she tries out for a modeling agency’s open casting call.

Project Runway host Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn won the award for Outstanding Reality/Competition Program, beating out Survivor host Jeff Probst, Antiques Roadshow, MythBusters and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

What Happened?

Ashley Graham is one of the most recognizable models in the world. She’s been on countless beauty campaigns, billboards, and magazine covers. But if you slap a bright red wig, bangs, cat-eye glasses, and cheek piercings on her face, she’s almost unrecognizable on the new episode of Undercover Boss: Celebrity Edition that airs Friday. Posing as Morgan, a curvy model who interviews at an agency, Graham tries out for the job. During her time undercover, she also meets a gifted ballerina who defies the conventional body-type for professional dancers.

Creating the look wasn’t easy. Shelby Michael Patton, the head makeup artist for Undercover Boss, slather her face in three layers of silicone rubber for more than an hour to create a mold, reports the New York Post. Her goal was to make Ashley unrecognizable, but not too caricature-like or over the top.

Other big winners at Saturday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards include America’s Got Talent judges Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn, So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, and The Taste host Anthony Bourdain. But the best winner of the night has to be Ashley Graham.

How It All Happened

During her Undercover Boss episode Graham pretended to be a model named Morgan who attended an open casting call. The Sports Illustrated model wore bangs, red hair, and cheek piercings for the role, and she was totally unrecognizable. She says that the look was so good that she actually made it to the final cut of the show.

Throughout her time undercover, Graham also tried out for a dance class at a local studio and met Alexa, a ballerina who defies the typical body-type of professional dancers. Graham says that she was impressed by how confident and positive Alexa was.

As for her own experience on the hit CBS reality series, Graham reveals that it was “awesome” and that she learned a lot about the people she encountered. She was particularly impacted by a woman who was homeless and dealing with mental health issues.

Speaking of the hit reality series, Undercover Boss recently won the Outstanding Reality Program Emmy Award for the second year in a row. Project Runway co-hosts Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn walked away winners as well, beating out Antiques Roadshow; Deadliest Catch; Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives; MythBusters; and Survivor host Jeff Probst.

Final Thoughts

Ashley Graham is a supermodel, author, body-positive activist, and now she’s an executive producer. And while she tells THR that producing was “definitely a lot more work” than she expected, she ultimately found it to be rewarding.

For the show, she went undercover to meet with aspiring curvy models who are struggling to break into the cutthroat fashion industry. While interviewing hopefuls, Graham also attempts to audition for an open casting call for a modeling agency, pretending to be Morgan Williams, a girl with red hair, bangs, and cheek piercings. Despite not making the cut, Graham says she was proud of her effort.

As the season progresses, Graham continues to be impressed with the talent she encounters. One contestant in particular, a dancer who defies conventional body-type standards for professional dancers, leaves her with a lasting impression. After she meets with the talented young woman, Graham expresses her admiration and praise for her skills, but also encourages her to remain true to herself.

In addition to meeting inspiring and talented potential stars, Graham has also learned a few lessons of her own from the process. She’s come to realize that the reality television industry is a “small and competitive world,” and she’s learned how to keep her own sanity by surrounding herself with a supportive network of family and friends.

As for her future, she’s not going to stop fighting for the rights of women. And she’s not afraid to share her own personal struggles, either. For example, in a May 2022 essay for Glamour, Graham wrote about her struggle to love her postpartum body and the challenges of accepting stretch marks. The piece received a slew of positive feedback, with fans praising Graham for being so real and encouraging other women to embrace their bodies as well.

In a recent Instagram post, she also shared an emotional photo from the day her son Isaac was born. Graham and husband Justin Ervin welcomed their firstborn in January, and the new mom has been open about her pregnancy journey ever since.

And while her upcoming book will likely continue to raise her profile even further, she’s just as committed as ever to continuing to promote body positivity and inclusivity. In the future, she hopes to see more of the same in the fashion industry, as well as other industries.
