San Jose State football: Spartans celebrate homecoming with rare win over Utah State

SAN JOSE — San Jose State scored 28 second-half points to defeat Utah State 42-21 in front of an announced homecoming crowd of 15,000 Saturday night at Spartan Stadium.

Running back Kairee Robinson rushed for 102 yards and broke a school record by running for a touchdown for the eighth consecutive game. Chevan Cordeiro completed 15 of 20 passes for 119 yards and 3 touchdowns.

SJSU earned its first win over Utah State since 2009, breaking a 10-game losing streak.

“This was a really good win for our team,” said SJSU coach Brent Brennan. “Those guys have given us fits for a decade and a half. And so that win was huge.”

The Spartans jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter. After Robinson caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Cordeiro, the Spartans led 14-0 with 1:03 left in the first quarter.

Utah State’s offense came alive in the second quarter. The Aggies tied the game when freshman quarterback McCae Hillstead threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Micah Davis with just over four minutes left in the second quarter.

After putting up 140 yards of total offense in the first quarter, SJSU was held to just 43 yards of offense in the second quarter. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime.

But the Spartans flipped the switch in the second half, scoring on their first two possessions. On the first, the Spartans drove 73 yards in 12 plays, capped by an eight-yard touchdown run by Quali Conley. Conley finished with 74 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

On the second, linebacker/fullback Charles Rogers caught a 10-yard touchdown pass — the first touchdown of his college career — to put the Spartans up 28-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

“All those times we lost in the second half, we knew we just had to change our mindset,” Cordeiro said. “At the end of the day to win a football game in Division I, you have to play four quarters … We knew we just had to keep the drives going.”

After cornerback Jay’Vion Cole intercepted Hillstead in the fourth quarter, SJSU iced the game when Cordeiro found wide receiver Nick Nash for a 29-yard touchdown and a 35-14 lead with nine minutes to play.

SJSU plays next Saturday at Hawaii. Hawaii (2-6) lost Saturday at New Mexico, falling 42-21 to a team SJSU beat by 28 last week.
