San Jose State erupts in second half to rout New Mexico, 52-24

Kairee Robinson scored a career-high four touchdowns and totaled 189 yards from scrimmage to lead San Jose State to a 52-24 win over New Mexico on Saturday afternoon.

Chevan Cordeiro completed 8 of 17 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Quali Conley added 123 yards and a touchdown.

Robinson and Conley combined for 249 of the Spartans’ 259 rushing yards as San Jose (2-5, 1-2 Mountain West Conference) snapped a three-game losing streak.

“I was just so proud of our team and how they responded after halftime,” said coach Brent Brennan. “I think that’s who we can be. We’ve done it in spurts, but not enough collectively. I think that was a really awesome way for us to close out a game.”

The Spartans took an early 14-10 lead after Robinson scored a 35-yard touchdown run with 4 minutes left in the second quarter.

On New Mexico’s final drive of the second half, the Lobos drove the ball 71 yards on 10 plays that was capped off by a Jacory Croskey-Merritt 4-yard touchdown to put New Mexico up 17-14 going into halftime.

After that, it was pretty much all San Jose State as the Spartans scored 38 second-half points.

The Spartans’ offense came alive after halftime. SJSU scored 24 unanswered points in the third quarter, led by a pair of touchdowns from Robinson.

After totaling 156 yards of offense in the first half, the Spartans erupted for a whopping 206 yards of offense in the third quarter alone.

“The second half, we went to another level,” Cordeiro said. “We emphasized at halftime that we needed to score in the second half. We had to play all four quarters and we knew that was what it was gonna take to win.”

San Jose State’s second-half flurry included two long touchdown passes by Cordeiro — 55 yards to Robinson and 54 yards to Nick Nash.

The Spartans’ defense held New Mexico to 130 yards and seven points in the second half. SJSU  came into Saturday’s game with the second-worst rushing defense in the country, but held the Lobos to 129 yards total on the ground.

San Jose will face Utah State in the Spartans’ homecoming game next Saturday. The Aggies lost a close matchup with Fresno State on Friday, 37-32.

“Utah State took Fresno State to the wire last night,” Brennan said. “They got an extra day of recovery on us. We’ve got a lot of work to do.”
