Volunteer positions include tax counselors who are trained by the AARP program and certified by the Internal Revenue Service and client facilitators, who schedule appointments and help clients at tax sites. For more details or to apply online by mid-November 2023, visit aarpfoundation.org/taxaidevolunteer online or call 925-726-3199.

Orientation sessions will be held in December, and certification classes will start in January. Tax preparation service will be from Feb. 1 through April 15. The program is administered by the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the IRS, California Franchise Tax Board and Contra Costa County. Volunteers do not need to be AARP members.

State gives Mitchell Canyon Education Center a $1M check

The state of California gave the future Mitchell Canyon Education Center on Mount Diablo a check for $1 million to boost its construction efforts, according to the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association.

Assemblymember Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, D-Orinda, presented the check at the site Sept. 20. The money will help fund the construction of a cutting-edge Education Center at the Mitchell Canyon entrance to the park.

“I’m thrilled to be presenting this funding which will mark a pivotal step toward enhancing educational opportunities, facilitating better access and enriching the visitor experience at Mount Diablo,” Bauer-Kahan said. “As chair of the Assembly’s Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee, I understand how crucial open space and nature are for our quality of life here in California, and I am proud of how this partnership will draw more visitors to Mount Diablo.”

The center is expected to serve the approximately 35,000 annual visitors who enter the park through Mitchell Canyon and will feature a 1,500-square-foot LEED-certified building and an outdoor education pavilion. For more details, visit mdia.org.

PLEASANT HILL

White Pony Express participates in ‘Stuff the Van’ event

Pleasant Hill organization White Pony Express recently participated in the Whole Foods Market “Stuff the Van” event, which was held across the country to benefit recipients of their Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program.

Earlier this year, Whole Foods donated 37 refrigerated vans to various organizations that are dedicated to reducing food insecurity. At the event, Whole Foods filled the van that had been donated to White Pony Express with fresh produce and other groceries from Whole Foods, which will feed hungry and underserved community members.

Whole Foods launched their Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program in September 2020, donating refrigerated vans to food rescue partners across the United States and Canada. These food rescue partners participate in the company’s Grocery Rescue Program — picking up food from their stores every week and redistributing it to feed neighbors fresh, high-quality food as quickly as possible.

BRENTWOOD

City attorney to retire at year’s end; replacement is sought

With the retirement of long-serving City Attorney Damien Brower at the end of the 2023 calendar year, the city of Brentwood has started the recruitment process for a new city attorney. Working with the executive search firm of Peckham & McKenney, the City Council hopes to have a new city attorney onboard by early 2024.

“My family and I are fortunate to have found Brentwood over 18 years ago,” Brower told the council. “We could not have asked for a better community to raise our sons, and our efforts were made so much easier by the strong support that I have received over the years from the mayors, city councils, city managers and staff with whom I have worked. And for that, I am so very grateful.”
