Ranked teams

No. 1 Serra 61, Sacred Heart Cathedral 0

The Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team scored at least one Touchdown in every quarter en route to its 16th straight win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The visiting Padres (4–0) scored their first three touchdowns on the ground, one by Jaden Green and two by Nano Latu. Tight end Cole Harrison caught a TD pass midway through the second quarter to make it 28-0, then quarterback Maealiuaki Smith concluded the first-half scoring with a 4-Yard run that put Serra in front 35-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League opener for both schools. The 61-point margin of victory is the Padres’ biggest during the 16-game streak that dates back to 2008. None of the games has been closer than 18 points (twice). Sacred Heart Cathedral, playing at home in Kezar Stadium, fell to 0-4. Also scoring touchdowns for the Padres were Jaden Lim, Brooks Trimmer and Chris Yoon on a 65-yard run. – Mike Lefkow

No. 2 De La Salle 14, Folsom 7

Derrick Blanche ran for 126 yards and a touchdown and Dominic Kelley carried 25 times for 102 yards to lead De La Salle to a hard-fought victory on the road in a matchup between Northern California powerhouses. The victory improved DLS’s record to 3-2. Darren Sabedra has the recap from Folsom here.

No. 3 San Ramon Valley 66, No. 11 Liberty 12

Luke Baker threw for 363 yards and five touchdowns as San Ramon Valley scored 42 points in the first quarter — yes, first quarter — to roll on its Homecoming game over Liberty. Madeline Kenney has the game story here.

Edison-Huntington Beach 21, No. 8 Wilcox 7

Edison (2-3) broke a 7-7 tie with 14 points in the second quarter in a game played in Bakersfield. The contest was scheduled at the last minute after The King’s Academy had to back out of a scheduled game against Wilcox. The Chargers bussed down and back on Friday. Wilcox coach Paul Rosa said the driver got lost on the way to the stadium, forcing the game to start late. “Long day,” Rosa texted. Edison scored first, but Wilcox (2-2) tied it on an 11-yard run by Jeiman Delos Santos that capped a 13-play drive. But that was all the scoring for Wilcox despite QB Tyson Bonilla rushing for over 100 yards. Wilcox will get to play at home next week when it hosts Mountain View on Friday in the PAL Bay Division opener for both schools. – Mike Lefkow 

No. 10 El Cerrito 24, Vacaville 16

A four-touchdown day from senior quarterback Michael Vanhook helped keep the host Gauchos a perfect 5-0. Washington State commit Kamani Jackson is more well-known as a lockdown defensive back, but he torched Vacaville as a receiver on Friday night. Jackson caught touchdowns of 20, 25 and 60 yards. Vanhook’s final TD pass was a three-yard slant to Zion Shelton. Savion Bandy’s two interceptions also helped El Cerrito stay ahead. The Gauchos will travel to Bethel on Oct. 7 after a bye week. — Joseph Dycus 

No. 13 St. Francis 42, No. 14 Archbishop Mitty 20

Kingston Keanaaina rushed for 167 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns to lead host St. Francis past previously undefeated Mitty in a WCAL opener. Keanaaina’s 63-yard touchdown run on the first play of the second half set the tone for the rest of the game. Dave Kiefer has all the details from Mountain View here.

Foothill 12, No. 15 Amador Valley 7

Visiting Foothill scored on a nifty diving catch by Michael O’Donoghue in the first quarter and on a 1-yard sneak by QB Erik Olsen to secure the upset in a matchup between Pleasanton rivals. O’Donoghue caught his TD on a halfback option from Andre Armendariz with a full-extension dive in the back of the end zone. Olsen made it 12-0 after Jake Patterson raced 50 yards to set up what proved to be the winning score. Amador Valley had drawn to within one score on a pass from Aidan Foley to Nate Jetter with less than four minutes left in the game. – Mike Lefkow   

No. 22 Campolindo 38, No. 16 Monte Vista 14

Campolindo’s offense finally put it all together in a dominant performance at Monte Vista, but the Cougars’ defense was, somehow, even better. Junior Luke Bonardi had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in the stunning rout. Joseph Dycus has the full story from Danville.

No. 18 California 48, Milpitas 6

Quarterback Jayden Macedo threw four touchdown passes and Carson Fife blocked three punts to lead California to a rout at home of previously undefeated Milpitas (3-1). California improved to 3-2. Mike Lefkow has more details here. 

No. 20 Christopher 35, Gilroy 0

William Rizqallah and Ray Waller each ran for two touchdowns and Jaxen Robinson threw a 20-yard TD pass to tight end Terrence Barnes as Christopher cruised to a victory on the road over crosstown rival Gilroy on Thursday night. The Cougars scored 21 points in the first quarter and added 14 more in the third. Christopher, which has allowed an average of 10 points per game this season, improved to 5-0. The Cougars have next week off and then open Blossom Valley Athletic League Mt. Hamilton Division play on Oct. 6 at Oak Grove. Gilroy (0-4) visits Sobrato next Saturday. – Darren Sabedra

No. 25 Las Lomas 21, Benicia 16

Sava Pouridis and Kaden Lagaya each scored a touchdown and Daniel Soccol kicked two field goals to lift Las Lomas to a victory at Benicia in a game that winning coach Doug Longero described as “sloppy.” Las Lomas led the Diablo Atheltic League Foothill Division opener 10-0 at halftime. Benicia made it a one-score game when Owen Wittry threw a long touchdown pass to Daniel Valdez. The two Las Lomas field goals completed the scoring for the visitors. A blocked punt and a touchdown by Stevie Jordan brought Benicia back to within striking distance. Benicia thought it took the lead when Myles Cooper hit Valdez with 4:15 left, but the officials penalized the home team for two forward passes. Las Lomas improved to 4-0. The Knights play host to crosstown rival Northgate on Friday. Benicia (1-3) visits Campolindo on Friday. – Darren Sabedra

East Bay

Alameda 34, Encinal 0

A year after losing a one-point heartbreaker to Encinal, Alameda shut out its crosstown rival in this season’s island bowl. Coach Robin Morris said senior Hayden Arndt “was making big tackles for loss all day on the D-line to help us get the ball back,” and that senior Sinisa Finau also had multiple sacks to lead Alameda. Senior Yousuf Avecado had an interception, and senior Will Roizen and sophomore Landyn Cole each had a receiving touchdown. Senior tight end Will Hester also caught a TD and junior running back Dion Bier punched in six points on the ground.  Alameda’s road victory over Encinal was its first since 2015 and snapped a six-game losing streak in the series. Alameda (4-0) plays host to San Lorenzo next Friday, and Encinal (1-4) has a bye and then plays at Berkeley on Oct. 6. — Joseph Dycus 

Antioch 40, Tennyson 16

Antioch got contributions from several players in its last non-league game of the season. Senior cornerback Issac Gaines returned an interception for a touchdown, and fellow senior defensive back Javion Smith caught a touchdown pass. Quarterback Larenzo Mayfield and sophomore running back Jaimaun Glover each ran for a TD. Curtis Tucker, a 6-foot-1 junior running back, rushed for two touchdowns. Antioch (4-1) plays at Heritage on Friday, and Tennyson (1-4) will have a bye week before playing at Bishop O’Dowd on Oct. 6. — Joseph Dycus 

Deer Valley 34, Dougherty Valley 28

A week after losing a one-possession game on an interception in the red zone, Deer Valley was on the other side of that experience when senior Coby Fosselman intercepted a Dougherty Valley pass with a minute left in the game. Lorenzo Craven had an interception and a forced fumble. Senior Jai’on Gary ran for almost 200 yards and two touchdowns and also threw for three touchdowns as a dual-threat quarterback. Senior running back Jabari McKinney caught one of those touchdowns on a 15-yard screen pass, senior Ivan Padilla had 100 yards receiving and a TD, and Shawndell Hines caught Gary’s other TD pass. Deer Valley (3-2) will play at Pittsburg on Oct. 6 after a bye week. Dougherty Valley (1-4) will play host to Washington-Fremont on Friday. — Joseph Dycus

Granada 56, San Leandro 20

The Matadors (4-1) continued their impressive start, winning for the fourth week in a row behind the passing of QB Quinn Boyd, who threw for 446 yards and seven touchdowns. Christian Clouser caught seven passes for 199 yards and three scores. All four Granada victories have been by at least 14 points. Boyd, a 6-foot-4 senior, has now passed for 1,804 yards and 23 touchdowns in Granada’s five games. Clouser increased his numbers to 28 catches for 591 yards and six TDs, tying him for the team lead with Mikey Boyd, Quinn’s younger brother. Hayden Hobbs, Estevan Duarte, Peyton Richards and Boyd also had TD receptions against the host Pirates, who slipped to 1-3. Richards added a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Matadors ran up 482 yards in total offense. The win by Granada, which plays in the EBAL Valley Division, sets up a non-league showdown next Friday with EBAL Mountain power California in San Ramon. – Mike Lefkow

James Logan 27, Heritage 21

Heritage dominated the first three quarters, building a 21-7 lead thanks to a Brooks Davis kick return for a touchdown, a 15-yard JJ Kinnaird touchdown reception from Austin Peters, and another touchdown early in the third quarter. But there was no stopping the Colts in the fourth period. Senior linebacker Tu’unahala Leao was everywhere, finishing with 14 tackles, two sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery plus an interception for good measure. Senior running back Giovanni Marcelo scored two rushing touchdowns during the rally, and then quarterback Jonathan Craft ran in the final touchdown to give Logan the lead. Logan (1-4) will play host to San Leandro on Oct. 6 after a bye week, and Heritage (2-3) will play host to Antioch next Friday. — Joseph Dycus

Miramonte 28, Northgate 27

Miramonte began its DAL Foothill schedule with a barnburner of a victory over Northgate. Miramonte coach Jack Schram said senior defensive backs Rhys Hire and JD Pearce broke up Northgate’s final pass at the goal line, and that Pearce also had an interception on the second-to-last drive. Sophomore quarterback Carson Blair threw touchdown passes to Jack Quinnild and Gabe Roman. Sophomore Charlie Hwang scored a rushing touchdown, as did Roman. Northgate’s senior quarterback Kawika Boyd threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns, and junior receiver Blayne Ballard had 233 yards from scrimmage, a receiving touchdown and a passing touchdown. Ben Hosler and senior Jake Berger also caught touchdowns for Northgate. The Broncos also got nine tackles each from Brady Willis and Jack Kessler. Next Friday, Northgate (0-4) will try to rebound at Las Lomas and Miramonte (4-0) will play at College Park. — Joseph Dycus

Oakland 14, Washington-San Francisco 0

Expectations weren’t high for the Wildcats coming into this season. They had lost 21 games in a row dating back to 2019 and have fewer than 25 players suiting up every week. But under first-year coach Terry Hendrix Jr., Oakland has found success. The Wildcats improved to 4-0 with the non-league win at Washington (2-2), their best start since 2004 when they opened the season with six victories in a row. Ymer Belvine ran back an interception 82 yards for a touchdown in the final minute of the first quarter, and Rahshaan Buffin scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth. A two-point conversion after the first TD made it 8-0, and it appeared the game would stay that way until Buffin, a senior quarterback, added some insurance. Cornerback Aaron Boulware stood out for Oakland in this defensive struggle with an interception in each half. Hendrix coached for six seasons at Fremont-Oakland between 2012-2017, compiling a record of 36-29. Since then, he’s made several stops as an assistant coach, most recently at Skyline. Next Friday, the Wildcats will take a four-hour bus ride to play Atascadero. – Mike Lefkow 

South Bay/Peninsula

Cupertino 34, Saratoga 13

Shen Hernandez-Ong ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more to lead Cupertino in a Peninsula Athletic League Lake Division opener. Saratoga scored first after a turnover and a short field. Cupertino tied it on a 7-yard pass from Hernandez-Ong to James Xue and took the lead on an 8-yard Hernandez-Ong run. The Pioneers extended their lead on a 4-yard run by Arvin Hosseini and a scoring pass from Hernandez-Ong to Jaidyn Sinclair. Sophomore Brandon Cheng was brought up to the varsity before the game and had a huge debut with two interceptions along with more than 80 yards in kickoff and punt returns. Cupertino (2-2, 1-0) hosts Lynbrook and Saratoga (1-3, 0-1) is at Mills on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

Del Mar 44, James Lick 0

The Dons’ do-it-all senior quarterback Andre Latimore diced Lick up through the air and on the ground Thursday night. Latimore kept the visitors honest with his arm by completing 5 of 7 passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Wide receiver Jake Schwoob caught the 20-yard TD pass. Latimore also ran for 180 yards and three touchdowns on just eight carries, one of those being a 60-yarder. Powerful running back Bradley Tavish also ran for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Robert Chapman said Manny Bernel-Martinez anchored the Del Mar defense in the middle. Del Mar (1-3)  plays at San Jose next Friday, and Lick (0-4) plays host to Yerba Buena. — Joseph Dycus

Lincoln-San Jose 13, Silver Creek 10

Lincoln, playing on the road, built a 13-3 halftime lead and held on as Silver Creek missed a field-goal attempt with 12 seconds left that would have evened the score. QB Kyan Phillips scored on a 14-yard run in the first quarter to give Lincoln the lead and added a 6-yard run in the second quarter. He finished with 92 yards in 15 carries and completed 9 for 18 passes for 120 yards. Lincoln also got five receptions for 80 yards from Justin Wietecha. Trajan Sinatra scored on a run in the third quarter to bring Silver Creek to within three points. Alonzo Hernandez and Rudy Hernandez combined for 138 yards rushing for the home team. Lincoln (3-2) has next week off, then travels to Live Oak to open BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division play on Oct. 6. Silver Creek (4-1) visits Westmont on Friday. – Darren Sabedra

Menlo-Atherton 21, Palo Alto 0

Devin Hyde had three sacks and other tackles for loss to lead a defensive effort that held Palo Alto scoreless. Lineman Gavin Di Gangi and linebacker Anthony Van Der Meer also stood out defensively. M-A’s offense received a boost when 280-pound RB Jordan Masuisui returned to play for the first time after suffering an injury in fall camp. He ran for a touchdown and Xander Eschelman passed for two touchdowns to Alek Marshall. Both teams have byes next week before beginning Peninsula Athletic League play on Oct. 6. M-A (2-3) hosts Wilcox while Palo Alto (2-3) plays Menlo School. — Glenn Reeves

Pioneer 10, Leland 7

Pioneer beat its Alamden Valley rival in the “Battle of the Den” game as Jesse Herrera ran for a touchdown in the second quarter and Jovanni Barajas kicked a 32-yard field goal to break a tie score in the fourth. Diego Vasquez’s 7-yard TD run in the final period accounted for Leland’s points. Herrera finished with 55 yards rushing. Pioneer, playing at home, also got nine tackles from Thomas Fries, seven tackles and a sack from Marcus Perez and five tackles and three pass defends from Darius Gutierrez-Bell. The Mustangs, who had lost their previous two games, improved to 2-2. They travel to Overfelt on Friday. Leland, which has lost four in a row since winning at Half Moon Bay in its season opener, visits Santa Teresa to begin BVAL Mt. Hamilton Division play on Thursday. – Darren Sabedra

San Jose 14, Evergreen Valley 13

San Jose had a 14-7 lead in the final minute Thursday when Evergreen Valley scored on a short pass from Ryan Tran to Dylan Ly to pull within 14-13. The Cougars went for two and the win but a run up the middle was stopped short and San Jose (1-3, 1-0) emerged with the win in a Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division opener. Kenneth Brown scored on a run to give EV an early lead. San Jose responded with touchdowns from Bryan Santos on a long run and on a pass from Cooper Gardner to Leo Cortinas. Linebackers Santos and Michael Aliki and lineman Brandon Pacheco stood out defensively for the Bulldogs, who host Del Mar on Friday. Evergreen Valley (0-4, 0-1) plays at Gunderson on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

South San Francisco 48, Lynbrook 0

Elijah Fields and Ryder DeGuzman-DeAsis scored two touchdowns apiece as South San Francisco routed Lynbrook in a PAL Lake opener that was called off in the third quarter. One of DeGuzman-DeAsis’ TDs was on a pick-six. Payton Jackson scored on a pass from sophomore QB Anthony Howell. Darren Miller and Gerald Tanielu added rushing touchdowns. Fields, Marcus Mercurio and Anthony Jara, who had a sack coming from his defensive back position, stood out defensively. “Our defense was flying all over the place,” SSF coach Kolone Pua said. “Our D-line was in their backfield all night.” South City (3-1, 1-0) hosts Gunn and Lynbrook (0-4, 0-1) is at Cupertino on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

Willow Glen 42, Overfelt 38 

With head coach Oscar Caballero suspended while the school district investigates a sideline incident at last week’s game, assistant coaches Aaron Lewis and BK Robertson helped lead Willow Glen to a thrilling victory. Riley Warren caught a 25-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left to win the game. Quarterback Cedeno Chavez carried the offense, completing 17 of 20 passes for 293 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 60 yards and two more TDs. Spencer Bartlinski had 114 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Chris Amann had 74 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Wyatt Walker and Sam O’Kane each had a sack, and Taggart Severson had a fumble recovery while AJ Trevarthen captained the defense. Willow Glen (3-1) plays host to Independence on Thursday. Overfelt (2-3) plays host to Pioneer on Friday. — Joseph Dycus
