With Pittsburg trailing 35-31, Alcantara and Noah Quesada connected on a 34-yard play on fourth down. California was in a cover-3 zone defense, where the safeties patrol the deep middle of the field and the corners protect the sidelines. Calcagno said Quesada, a 6-foot-1 senior, made a nice catch for the winning score. California (2-2) led 14-0 into the second quarter and increased the margin to 21-9 right after the half. But the Pirates scored 22 points over the final three minutes of the third period and led 31-21 to begin the fourth quarter. Alcantara threw three TD passes and a 2-point conversion to put Pittsburg in front. California came right back with two quick touchdowns to go in front 35-31 with about nine minutes left. The go-ahead score was a pass from QB Jayden Macedo to Nick Fox that covered 77 yards. The Grizzlies will try to get back on the winning side next Friday when they host Milpitas (3-0).
