No. 1 Serra 38, Central Catholic-Modesto 7

If there were any concerns about the Padres after uneven performances in their first two games this season, they put those worries to rest against a very good Central Catholic team Friday night in Modesto. Serra (3-0) outscored the home team 28-0 during a dominant second half in its final tuneup before West Catholic Athletic League play begins Sept. 22 against Sacred Heart Cathedral in San Francisco. Quarterback Maealiuaki Smith threw two touchdown passes and 6-foot-6 tight end Cole Harrison caught a pair of TDs – one from Smith, the other from Nano Latu on a halfback option – in the one-sided win. Perhaps more importantly to coach Patrick Walsh is that Serra has outscored its last two opponents 48-0 after intermission. “We played a full 48 minutes,” Walsh said. “We train for that. All the teams we play are strong. We have to play a full 48 minutes.” The game was competitive for a half. Jaden Green scored on a 5-Yard run less than a minute into the game, but that was it for the offense until Thomas Gooch kicked a 45-yard field goal in the final two minutes of the second quarter to give Serra a 10-7 lead at the break. When the teams returned, it was all Serra. Harrison’s scores were from 27 and 7 yards. Braden Agosta caught a 34-yard pass in the third quarter that made it 24-7. Brooks Trimmer finished the scoring with a 2-yard run. Central Catholic fell to 2-2. – Mike Lefkow

No. 2 De La Salle 35, No. 12 St. Francis 17

In a game that was tight most of the way, quarterback Toa Faavae scored on a 12-yard bootleg with 4:19 left to give visiting De La Salle its first double-digit advantage of the season. The Spartans added another touchdown a short time later as they avoided their first 0-3 start since 1975. Darren Sabedra has the game story here.

No. 3 Pittsburg 10, Monterey Trail-Elk Grove 7

Noah Quesada interception in the final minute clinched a defensive battle as Pittsburg won its home opener to improve to 3-0. Marley Alcantara’s 34-yard touchdown pass to Quesada in the first quarter gave the Pirates a 7-0 lead against an opponent that was seeking its first win and season-opening losses to Folsom and St. Francis. Monterey Trail evened the score in the second quarter and the teams remained tied until Pittsburg kicked a short field goal with about five minutes left to take the lead. Pittsburg will play host to California next Friday before traveling to Los Gatos on Sept. 29. — Darren Sabedra

No. 4 San Ramon Valley 45, Elk Grove 7

San Ramon Valley was back on the road for the third consecutive game on Friday. Once again, the Danville school — led by last season’s Bay Area News Group player of the year Luke Baker — sent a home team to a multi-score defeat. Baker threw six touchdown passes as the Wolves growled to a 28-7 halftime cushion and never looked back. Hudson Brinton’s 6-yard reception from Baker broke a 7-7 tie early in the second quarter. Baker’s second TD pass of the night to Owen Scott, this one covering 34 yards, widened the margin to 21-7. Baker followed with a 39-yard TD pass to Brinton for a three-touchdown advantage. Brinton finished with four TD catches. Evan Economos also had a receiving TD as SRV topped 40 points for the third consecutive game. In their first two games, the Wolves beat St. Ignatius 42-14 and Acalanes 44-21. SRV plays its home opener next Friday against McClymonds, which has outscored Bellarmine (40-0) and Bishop O’Dowd (45-0) by a combined 85-0. When SRV visited Mack last season, the home team won 45-42 in one of the games of the year. — Darren Sabedra

Grant-Sacramento 22, No. 5 Los Gatos 21

Despite being dominated in time of possession, Los Gatos came up just one point short in an intersectional battle against visiting Grant-Sacramento, a defending state champion, in a game that came about in the middle of the week on short notice after Live Oak canceled its game against the Bay Area team. No. 6 Valley Christian 34, Hollister 3

In its final game before WCAL play begins in two weeks, Valley Christian built a 13-3 halftime advantage on its way to a blowout victory. Sophomore Ekiah McLemore, who ran for two TDs in a win last week at Salinas, rushed for three on Friday to lead the Warriors. Joseph Stephens and Marcel Leggett Jr. also ran for touchdowns as Valley Christian, which won one game last season, improved to 3-0. Valley will have next week off and then will play host to Bellarmine on Sept. 23 in a WCAL opener. Hollister fell to 1-2. — Darren Sabedra

No. 8 McClymonds 45, Bishop O’Dowd 0

In the first matchup between Oakland’s premier public and private school football programs in over a decade, host McClymonds put up 328 rushing yards in a rout. Sharky Tamale and Tajir Golden each ran for two touchdowns to lead Mack. Joseph Dycus’ full report from Oakland is here.

No. 10 Wilcox 28, Sacred Heart Cathedral 12

The Wilcox ground attack was in top form at home on Friday, rushing for 337 yards (eight per carry) in a victory over Sacred Heart Cathedral. QB Tyson Bonilla ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns in 16 attempts and Jamontay Amataga had 15 carries and two TDs for 109 yards as the Chargers improved to 2-1. Bonilla also completed 6 of 7 passes for 66 yards. Wilcox (2-1) announced during the week that it is looking for an opponent for next weekend or the following weekend after its game at The King’s Academy scheduled for Thursday was canceled. SHC (0-3) will have a bye next weekend, then will open WCAL play at home against top-ranked Serra. — Darren Sabedra

No. 11 El Cerrito 34, Fremont-Oakland 0, forfeit

The game was stopped about two minutes before halftime, as Fremont had barely enough players to field a team. “Fremont had very low numbers, then a few kids got hurt,” El Cerrito coach Jacob Rincon said. The game will go in the books as a forfeit, Rincon added, but the stats will count. Micah Avery scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 70 yards in the first quarter. El Cerrito (3-0) added three more scores in the second quarter before the game was stopped. Gavin Thompson returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown, QB Michael Vanhook hooked up with three-star recruit Kamani Jackson for a 25-yard TD pass, then Vanhook added a 10-yard rushing score. Fremont’s next two games are non-league visits to Liberty and Livermore. Then the Tigers (0-3) will have back-to-back bye weeks before opening Oakland Athletic League play Oct. 13 against Oakland. – Mike Lefkow

No. 13 Liberty 53, Wood-Vacaville 14

Sophomore running back Jaxon Bell had himself a night for Liberty as the host Lions bounced back from a one-point loss to Los Gatos to roll past Wood. Bell rushed for 266 yards and six touchdowns in 14 carries to lead the Brentwood school to its second victory in three games this season. Senior Ryan McKendry also scored for Liberty, on a 95-yard run. The Lions led 19-7 after the first quarter, 32-7 at halftime and 46-7 after three quarters. Liberty is scheduled to play host to Fremont-Oakland next Friday before traveling to San Ramon Valley on Sept. 22. Wood fell to 3-1. — Darren Sabedra

No. 14 Monte Vista 40, Bellarmine 30

Quarterback Brayden Turner completed 11 of 19 passes for 328 yards and five touchdowns — one shy of the school record — to lead the host Mustangs past the Bells (1-2) in a non-league game. Leading by three, Turner evaded a blitz and found Julian McMahan open for a game-clinching 25-yard touchdown pass with 2:15 left in the fourth quarter as Monte Vista improved to 3-0 for the second time in three years. Bellarmine quarterback Parker Threatt scored three touchdowns and had a combined 295 yards rushing and passing. Curtis Pashelka has the recap here.

No. 15 St. Ignatius 35, Cathedral Catholic-San Diego 28

The Wildcats (2-1) won a thriller for the second week in a row, scoring the game’s final two touchdowns to erase a 28-20 fourth-quarter deficit. QB Soren Hummel reached the end zone on a keeper with 2:56 left to break a 28-28 tie. SI tied the contest with 5:53 remaining when Hummel connected with Pierce St. Geme on a 2-point conversion after Mo Barnum’s touchdown made it 28-26. Last week, St. Ignatius held on to beat Jesuit-Carmichael 28-27 when the home team failed to make a 2-point conversion with two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. St. Ignatius, playing at home against Cathedral Catholic (1-3), led 20-7 midway through the third quarter before the visitors from San Diego scored three unanswered touchdowns. Jarious Hogan’s 4-yard run gave the Wildcats their 13-point advantage. SI is off next week, then visits San Francisco rival Riordan on Sept. 23 in its WCAL opener. – Mike Lefkow 

No. 16 Archbishop Mitty 35, Santa Teresa 0

Mitty, playing on the road, led 21-0 at halftime en route to finishing its non-league schedule 3-0. The Monarchs opened the season with wins over James Logan and Aptos. Friday, Joey Campagna passed for 119 yards and two touchdowns and Elijah Bautista carried 16 times for 142 yards — which included a 60-yard TD run after halftime — to lead the Monarchs. Bautista scored on a 4-yard run in the first half. Six Mitty players caught passes, led by Toju Maku (64-yard TD reception). The Monarchs finished the scoring with two third-quarter touchdowns. Mitty has next week off, then opens WCAL play on Sept. 22 at St. Francis. Santa Teresa (0-3) plays host to Leigh next Friday. — Darren Sabedra

No. 17 Amador Valley 14, No. 22 Acalanes 12

Jake Goldsworthy scored on a 5-yard run and stand-in quarterback Aidan Foley ran it in from 10 yards out as Amador Valley overcame a 12-point deficit to defeat host Acalanes. The home team, which fell to 0-3, did all its scoring in the first half. Mike Lefkow has more details here.

No. 18 Campolindo 14, Windsor 14

Scott Lyon’s 30-yard reception on fourth-and-12 from the Windsor 40 set up host Campolindo’s tying touchdown in the fourth quarter. The visitors then drove down the field but missed a 33-yard field-goal attempt with 16 seconds left. The decision to play overtime was left to the coaches, and Campo’s Kevin Macy, whose team beat Vanden-Fairfield in double OT to open the season and lost at home to Amador Valley 6-0 last week, elected to settle for the tie. Campo is 1-1-1. Windsor is 0-1-1. Micah Parker’s 1-yard run in the second quarter gave Campo a 7-0 halftime lead. Windsor evened the score in the third quarter and went ahead in the fourth. — Darren Sabedra

No. 20 California 42, Escalon 21

The Grizzlies led 42-14 after three quarters while rolling to their second straight win after a season-opening defeat. Senior quarterback Jayden Macedo threw five touchdown passes totaling 201 yards. He now has eight TD connections in California’s three games. Three of Macedo’s air strikes went to Nick Fox, covering distances of 86, 24 and 53 yards. The other two were caught by Chase McGill. The first went 25 yards, the second 13 yards. In all, Macedo was 9 for 13 passing for 234 yards. The Grizzlies led 21-7 at the half before their double-double in the third quarter – doubling the score and doubling their lead. Escalon was 3-0 coming in, including an impressive 42-39 win over Windsor last week. But the Cougars are playing their first seven games this season on the road while their stadium at the school is being upgraded. – Mike Lefkow

No. 21 Christopher 28, San Mateo 7

Wil Rizqallah led the way with 13 carries for 168 yards and three touchdowns. Amari Bluford also scored for the Cougars. Strong safety Evan Vernon had a monster game with 16 tackles, including two for loss. QB Jaxen Robinson was 8 of 16 for 74 yards and one TD. Christopher (3-0) hosts Overfelt on Thursday. San Mateo (2-1) plays at Los Altos on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

East Bay

Alhambra 45, Pinole Valley 7

Quarterback Beau Blau threw four touchdown passes and ran 42 yards for another score in an easy win for the Bulldogs (2-0). The score was tied 7-7 after the first 12 minutes, then Alhambra erupted for 24 points in the second quarter. Blau, a 5-11 senior, threw touchdowns to three different receivers, including a pair to Luke Beaty. He also connected with Sylas Mankin and Lucas Pieper. Mason Jones scored on a 10-yard run in the second quarter that broke a 7-7 tie and started the Bulldogs on their run of 38 points through the end of the game. Kicker Mason Stinson had a nice night for Alhambra, going 6 for 6 on extra points and booting a 26-yard field goal that boosted the Bulldogs’ lead to 31-7 right before the half. Pinole Valley (1-2) also lost two of its first three last year, then went 8-2 en route to a Division 7AA CIF state championship. The Spartans will try to get back on track next Friday when they visit Miramonte. – Mike Lefkow

American Canyon 30, Foothill 28

In maybe the wildest finish of the young season, Foothill suffered a heartbreaking loss when Mason Harris’ Hail Mary pass from midfield deflected into the arms of receiver Jalen Rocker for a touchdown on the final play of the game to give visiting American Canyon a stunning victory. Foothill had gone ahead with 12 seconds to go when Michael O’Donoghue caught a TD pass from Erik Olsen. After a squib kick, American Canyon had a final shot from midfield. Olsen finished with three touchdown passes for Foothill, which was trying to bounce back from a 28-25 season-opening loss to Heritage. Harris, who extended plays all night, threw four TD passes for American Canyon (2-1). Foothill travels to El Cerrito next Friday. — Darren Sabedra

Hayward 48, Tennyson 12

The Farmers’ winning ways continued on Friday night as they improved to 3-0 by routing visiting Tennyson. Senior quarterback Kennedy Braziel passed for 188 yards and two TDs and also rushed for one touchdown. WR Emmanuel Sega turned his one catch into a 96-yard TD, and teammate Maurice Hall had 106 yards from scrimmage and two TDs. Junior RB Mateaki Paongo ran for 81 yards and one TD, and backfield mate Jordyn Wilson also rushed for 56 yards and a touchdown. Junior Isaiah Galli returned an interception for a touchdown for the second consecutive week, this time taking an errant pass back 101 yards. Hayward plays at Montgomery-Santa Rosa next Friday, and Tennyson (0-3) will seek its first victory at home against Oakland Tech. — Joseph Dycus

Oakland 44, Galileo-San Francisco 0

The Wildcats went three seasons without a victory, but all Oakland can seem to do now is win. QB Rah’shaan Buffin ran for 143 yards and two TDs, threw for 106 yards and one TD, and forced a fumble. Travis Williams returned the opening kickoff 87 yards for a TD and also had a sack and four tackles. RB Amiliohn Brown had eight carries for 56 yards, but his biggest contributions came on defense. He recovered two fumbles and returned an interception 78 yards for a TD. DB/RB Ymer Belvine had 42 yards rushing, nine yards passing, and 31 yards receiving. Malachi Sanchez had a 38-yard TD. Oakland (2-0) plays host to Hercules next Friday. — Joseph Dycus

South Bay/Peninsula

Alisal 27, Sequoia 21

Sequoia got touchdowns from MLB TJ Talisa, who scored on a 75-yard fumble return, Luke Rowell on a 43-yard pass from Shawn Royer and Logan Kern on a 53-yard run, but fell short against the visitors from Salinas. “Overall it was an uneven performance with a chance to win at the end,” Sequoia coach Rob Poulos said. Sequoia (1-2) plays at rival Woodside on Friday before beginning PAL Ocean Division play the following week. — Glenn Reeves

Aragon 28, Lincoln-San Jose 6

Spencer Unga, Ivan Nisa, Marcus Gosch and Sean Hickey scored one rushing touchdown apiece for Aragon (2-1), which led 14-0 at halftime. Amaziah Tanielu stood out defensively for the Dons. “We’re lucky we caught Lincoln when we did,” Aragon coach Steve Sell said. “They’re really young, but they’ll get better.” Aragon hosts Carlmont and Lincoln plays host to Westmont on Friday. — Glenn Reeves

Branham 55, Soledad 26

Branham led 7-6 at halftime before exploding for 21 points in the third quarter and 27 in the fourth. Jack Lewis completed 16 of 22 passes for 353 yards and five touchdowns. Elias Antillion carried 15 times for 168 yards and one TD as the Bruins amassed 674 yards of total offense. Preston Conrad was on the receiving end of two of Lewis’ touchdown passes, The other three went to Brayden Hodges, Sebastian Golden and Antillion. Francis Mone and Kodi Fowler had three sacks apiece. Cupertino 46, Yerba Buena 6

A determined effort from senior Arvin Hosseini on Thursday helped the Pioneers earn their first victory of the season. Hosseini rushed for 69 yards and three touchdowns on six carries. Senior quarterback Shen Hernandez-Ong completed 5 of 6 passes for 70 yards and two TDs, with seniors Jaidyn Sinclair and James Xue each catching a TD. Hernandez-Ong also had 91 rushing yards and one TD, and senior Eashan Chatterjee ran for 62 yards and a TD as Cupertino rushed for 285 yards. Cupertino (1-2) plays at Saratoga on Sept. 22, and Yerba Buena (1-2) plays host to Prospect on that same day. — Joseph Dycus 

Half Moon Bay 26, Carlmont 12

After two blowout losses to start the season, Half Moon Bay relied on a steady running game Thursday to get back on track. Junior RB Connor Heath rushed for a two-yard TD and had a whopping 44 carries, and junior QB Dusty Dimas threw for three TDs. Junior Kenji Holcomb caught two of those touchdowns and Nolan Mullins brought in one TD. Carlmont’s Sean Chopoff had an interception return for a TD and senior RB Braeden Kumer rushed for TD. Half Moon Bay (1-2) will play at Burlingame next Friday and Carlmont (0-3) will travel to Aragon. — Joseph Dycus

Hillsdale 28, Woodside 12

Erick Waugh completed 19 of 31 passes for 314 yards and four touchdowns as Hillsdale (3-0) handed Woodside (2-1) its first loss. Dante Allendorf compiled 133 total yards, carrying 15 times for 54 yards and catching two passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. Kyle King had six catches for 98 yards and a TD. Evan Usher carried 17 times for 79 yards and two touchdowns for Woodside. Both teams are home on Friday, Hillsdale vs. Sacred Heart Prep and Woodside against Sequoia. — Glenn Reeves

Mountain View 40, Leigh 21

Kevin Conway completed 17 of 26 passes for 283 yards – 261 in the first half — to lead Mountain View to a victory at home, the team’s first triumph since the mother of one of its seniors died on Aug. 30. Conway passed for four touchdowns, ran for another and passed for a two-point conversion as Mountain View improved to 2-1. Leigh dropped to 2-1. David Kiefer has the full story here.

Overfelt 38, Leland 21

Overfelt led 20-0 midway through the second quarter on Thursday thanks to a dominant running game and a relentless pass rush. San Jose State commit John Stowers rushed for 146 yards and a TD on 14 carries, to go with 15 tackles, two sacks and an interception returned for a TD. RB Daron Hall had 123 yards and a TD on the ground, and senior QB Gabriel Martinez was 8 for 12 for 146 yards passing. He accounted for two TDs. Coach Carlo Maningo said the offensive line “took over” the game. Isia Smith had 102 receiving yards and Taylor Gordon caught a TD. Jermiaha Lara and sophomore Jerome Mettos each had two sacks, and Lino Eti had one sack. Overfelt (2-1) plays at Christopher next Thursday and Leland (1-2) plays host to Willow Glen on Friday. — Joseph Dycus 

Santa Clara 47, Del Mar 34

Nelson Gifford earned his first victory as Santa Clara’s coach on Friday as Joseph Manueli rushed for two TDs and Matt Nguyen ran for touchdowns of 8, 15 and 42 yards to lead the way. Alex Lopez also ran for a TD. Quarterback Matthew Conklin threw an 18-yard pass to WR Jeremiah Karongo for Santa Clara’s last TD. Andre Latimore did it all for Del Mar, rushing for over 183 yards and three TDs, and passing for 142 yards with two more TDs. Del Mar coach Robert Chapman said WR Jake Schwoob surpassed the 100-yard mark in receiving yards along with catching a three-yard TD. Miguel Medina caught a five-yard touchdown for Del Mar, too. Santa Clara (1-2) plays at Milpitas on Friday, and Del Mar (0-3) plays host to James Lick on Sept. 21. — Joseph Dycus

Silver Creek 49, San Jose 6

Silver Creek concluded the non-league portion of its schedule Thursday with a lopsided win. The Raiders led 35-0 at halftime. Ten players combined for 280 yards rushing. Alijah Guzman had a team-high 74 yards on six carries and scored two touchdowns. Gabriel Lim had 63 yards on six carries. Rushing touchdowns were also scored by Leo Lopez (4 carries, 41 yards) and Dominic Lim (3-49). QB Trajan Sinatra completed five passes with two going for touchdowns scored by Noa Wooden and Alonzo Hernandez. Defensively, Mathias McClain had a sack and the Raiders came up with six turnovers, four fumble recoveries and two interceptions. Silver Creek (3-0)  begins BVAL Santa Teresa-Foothill Division play next week at home vs. Piedmont Hills. San Jose (0-3) plays at Evergreen Valley next in a BVAL West Valley Division opener. — Glenn Reeves

Sobrato 48, North Monterey County 28

The Bulldogs reached 40 points for the second straight week, with junior Johnothan Cruz’s two interceptions helping Sobrato pull away on the road Thursday. Sobrato led 20-14 at halftime. RB Noah Taylor ran for 50- and 40-yard TDs after running for almost 300 yards last week. Junior QB Ray Perez threw for three TDs, two to junior Ryan Hankins and one to Alex Kushchanka, while also rushing for one TD. Junior Parker Orr ran for a touchdown on a jet sweep. Sobrato (2-1) plays host to Live Oak next Saturday. — Joseph Dycus 

Willow Glen 24, Pioneer 17

Cedeno Chavez carried 20 times for 127 yards and two touchdowns as well as completing 14 of 25 passes for 144 yards and another TD, a 34-yard pass to Riley Warren. He also kicked a 34-yard field goal as Willow Glen posted the win over a traditional rival from the San Jose Unified School District. Sam O’Kane had a sack on defense while Wyatt Walker and Chris Amann came up with fumble recoveries. Both teams play at Leland next, Willow Glen (1-1) on Friday and Pioneer (1-2) on Sept. 22. — Glenn Reeves
