Any week that features a matchup between the top two teams in the rankings should be a good one.

That’s what we have in Week 2 as De La Salle — ranked second in the Bay Area News Group Top 25 — travels on Saturday to play No. 1 Serra.

The new week also includes McClymonds traveling to San Jose for its season opener against Bellarmine and Los Gatos making the drive to Brentwood to face Liberty.

Here are this week’s top matchups and schedule:

Friday

No. 5 San Ramon Valley (1-0) at No. 17 Acalanes (0-1), 7 p.m.: Reigning Bay Area News Group player of the year Luke Baker opened the season by eviscerating Top 25 opponent St. Ignatius in San Francisco, passing for 321 yards and two TDs in a 42-14 rout. Junior Owen Scott caught eight passes for 162 yards and a touchdown, and four-star linebacker Marco Jones hauled in a TD reception as a tight end. Fellow two-way player John Pau Mendoza rushed for two TDs. Jones and Pau Mendoza will need to be in top form in another road matchup, this time against Acalanes, which boasts sprinter’s speed on the outside in WRs Paul Kuhner and Trevor Rodgers. Both caught TD passes from senior QB Sully Bailey in a close loss to San Marin last week. Junior Niko White had 104 receiving yards, and senior Jack Giorgianni had four tackles for loss for an Acalanes team that will need to keep pace with one of the best offenses in the Bay Area. — Joseph Dycus 

No. 6 Los Gatos (1-0) at No. 14 Liberty (1-0), 7 p.m.: Los Gatos has won the last two years by a combined 69-17, and it remains one of the top Bay Area high school programs. No opinions would have changed after the Wildcats routed Soquel 45-14 last week. But Liberty should present more of a challenge than Soquel. The Lions could be pretty good this season, and maybe a top-10 team next year. The starting QB is junior Sage Robertson, who was 7 for 9 for 126 yards and three TDs last week in a 49-3 demolishing of Enochs-Modesto. Sophomore RB Jaxson Bell rushed 16 times for 194 yards and three scores. Linebackers Richie Beltram and Zaire Calhoun, who tied for the team lead in tackles with nine apiece, are a sophomore and junior, respectively. Los Gatos is 36-6 since 2019 and has a wealth of seniors to continue that success. AJ Minyard threw for 244 yards and five TDs vs. Soquel. Receivers Jaylen Thomas and Scott Garwood combined for 10 catches, 156 yards and five TDs. Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung rushed for 71 yards and had four catches for 62 yards. The Wildcats also got a pretty good effort from junior LB Henry Masters, who had 12 tackles and a pick-six. – Mike Lefkow   

No. 9 McClymonds (0-0) vs. No. 23 Bellarmine (1-0) at San Jose City College, 7 p.m.: When these teams met last season in Oakland, McClymonds won in overtime 24-21. Both went on to capture section and regional championships before losing in state title games. For Mack, it will open the new season needing to replace graduated star Jaivian Thomas, who shredded Bellarmine for 227 yards and two TDs in 19 carries last year. Tajir Golden is expected to move from receiver to RB to help fill Thomas’ shoes. Golden also had a big game last year against Bellarmine, catching 12 passes for 117 yards and a TD. Bellarmine started its season by holding off Menlo-Atherton 17-14 last week at SJCC, giving new coach David Diaz-Infante his first win. Reece McKeever was one of the breakout standouts for Bellarmine, rushing for 113 yards in 29 carries. QB Parker Threatt had a 23-yard TD run against M-A. – Darren Sabedra

Aptos (0-1) vs. No. 18 Archbishop Mitty (1-0) at Foothill College, 7 p.m.: The Monarchs are attempting to forge a new identity this season since a lot of players on the varsity were backups or members of the junior varsity in 2022. A win over Aptos on Friday night would be another step in that direction. Mitty opened the season last week with a 20-12 victory at James Logan. Things got a little dicey in the fourth quarter when James Logan cut the lead to 14-6, but junior WR Alec Grimaldo raced 60 yards with an onside kick to make it a two-score game again. Aptos runs a Wing-T offense under veteran coach Randy Blankenship. It features a lot of misdirection, and the Mariners have been very successful with it. Mitty has plenty of talent, though some of it is unproven. QB Joey Campagna threw for 179 yards last week, RB AJ Cenizal rushed for 59 yards and TE Caden Allard had three catches for 91 yards and a score. Aptos was pretty balanced in a 21-14 loss to Oakdale, passing for 169 yards and gaining 158 yards on the ground. – Mike Lefkow

Palo Alto (1-0) at No. 24 Leland (1-0), 7:15 p.m.: The Chargers scored one of the biggest upsets in Week 1, going on the road and routing then-No. 24 Half Moon Bay 40-7. Leland — 2-8 last season — rushed for 231 yards and five TDs, including 100 yards and a TD from senior Jack Christensen. Five Chargers, including seniors Diego Vasquez and Chayse Swenson, scored rushing TDs. Standing in the way of a 2-0 start is defending CCS Division V champion Palo Alto, which defeated Fremont-Sunnyvale 28-10 in its opener. Senior RB Jeremiah Madrigal rushed for 47 yards and a TD and should be a handful for Leland. Senior QB Declan Packer picked up right where he left off from a strong junior year, throwing for three TDs. WRs Jason Auzenne and Jeremiah Fung each caught a TD in Week 1. — Joseph Dycus

Saturday

No. 2 De La Salle (0-1) at No. 1 Serra (1-0), 1:30 p.m.: Serra is 1-10 against De La Salle under longtime coach Patrick Walsh, a former DLS star. But the San Mateo school won the most recent meeting between the teams, 24-21 last season in Concord. In that victory, Serra outscored DLS 17-0 in the fourth quarter to erase a 14-point deficit, prevailing on a 20-yard field goal by Dylan Joudieh with two seconds left. DLS enters the rematch coming off a season-opening 35-14 loss at home to SoCal heavyweight Orange Lutheran. DLS QB Toa Faavae ran for 90 yards and two TDs and passed for 130 yards in the defeat. Serra opened its season with a 21-14 victory at home over Folsom but wasn’t completely satisfied after being held scoreless for the final three quarters. Charlie Willey (80-yard reception), Cole Harrison (60-yard reception) and Danny Niu (6-yard run) scored for Serra, which also got three sacks and a fumble recovery from lineman Taniela Folau. DLS has not started a season 0-2 since 2004, the year its national-record 151-game win streak ended. – Darren Sabedra
