President Joe Biden visited the mansion-studded hills of Los Gatos Monday during his re-election fundraiser trip through Silicon Valley.

Around 20 people stood on the side of the road to catch a glimpse of Biden’s motorcade as it sped down Cypress Way at about 2 p.m. and up the hill toward an event hosted by Microsoft Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott and his wife Shannon Hunt-Scott, along with LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.

A group of five women were waving American flags. One carried a Biden sign from Biden’s 2020 campaign, with the second zero crossed out and replaced by a “4.”

“We all support Joe, so we all want to come show him some support from our little town,” said Tina Giusto, a longtime Los Gatos resident. “It’s an honor to have the president in Los Gatos.”

“It’s not every day the president drives past your house,” added Los Gatos resident Lola Feldman.

First-grader Sofie Kakes, who was waiting to watch Biden’s motorcade with her family, said she was excited to see the president.

“I really want to meet him because I want to be a president, too,” Sofie said.

A group of Donald Trump supporters also gathered at the corner of Cypress Way and Loma Alta Avenue to watch the motorcade. One had a sign that read “My dog is smarter than Biden.”

Trump is the GOP’s frontrunner, despite his federal indictment for hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate, and reportedly has raised more than $6 million since being indicted, said Bill James, chairman of Santa Clara County’s Democratic Party.

Longtime Los Gatos resident and Biden supporter Wes Toy joined the group of spectators.

“It’s wonderful that he chose a supporter who lives close by and I get to cheer him on when he gets to the house on Aztec Ridge,” Toy said.

After the Los Gatos fundraiser, Biden drove up the peninsula to Atherton, where he attended a fundraiser hosted by venture capitalist and former state controller Steve Westly and his wife, Anita Yu. Tickets for the reception at their home started at $6,600, according to an emailed invitation acquired by the Bay Area News Group.

Biden attended a third reception in Marin County on Tuesday, where he was the guest of eight tech, climate and private equity entrepreneurs and investors, including Dan Kalafatas, Hadley Mullin, Steve Silbertein and Mark Robinson.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also made a fundraising trip through California this week, attending a breakfast roundtable fundraiser at a Sacramento country club before heading to the Bay Area for a private fundraiser in Woodside.

On Monday, Biden announced $643 million in federal funding for climate programs, $67 million of which will be coming from the U.S. Department of Energy to help California upgrade its power grid to reduce wildfire risk.

The remaining $575 million make up the “Climate Resilience Regional Challenge,” a package that Congress approved last year as part of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. It will go into a new federal program that offers grant money to cities and states to pay for climate resilience.
