Oversight may notbe enough for BART

Re: “BART bailout should come with state oversight, other conditions” (Page A6, June 13).

Thank you BART Director Debora Allen for a reality check on BART.

I grew up riding BART to the A’s and for school trips to San Francisco. Today, it is dirty, crime-ridden and costs are out of control. Caltrain faced problems and reimagined its fleet. I love VTA now in the South Bay, with my only complaint for it to be faster through San Jose. BART simply asks for more money.

Maybe it is time for someone else entirely to run the system.

Can U.S. survive anotherTrump presidency?

Let’s not forget the chaotic and despicable events of Jan. 6, 2021, and the man who was responsible, the man behind “The Big Lie,” Donald Trump.

As president, he is on record trying to change or negate the votes of Americans and alter the results of a free and fair election to benefit himself. He took the oath of office in 2017 to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States, as have so many other members of Congress who support him.

Again, a candidate for this nation’s highest office and in the national spotlight with two criminal indictments and others pending. Impeached twice while in office, a presidency littered with scandal and blatant incompetence raises the question: Can our democracy survive another Trump presidency?

Florida better for Blackpeople than other states

Re: “Civil rights groups warn tourists about Florida in wake of ‘openly hostile’ laws” (Page A3, May 22).

It’s a laugh to read that the NAACP has issued a “Travel Advisory” claiming that Florida is “openly hostile towards African Americans.”

The Census Bureau could tell them a few things:

• Homeownership: 49% of Black people in Florida own their own homes, greater than the national average. For reference, the corresponding figure for California is 35.6%.

• Unemployment: In early 2023, Florida’s black unemployment rate was 3.4% — compared with 10.5% in Illinois and 8.0% in New York State.

• Black people don’t seem worried about moving to Florida, which in 2010-20 attracted more new Black residents (60,000) than all but four other states (Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and Nevada).

• But in the same period, Black people abandoned “progressive” New York, Illinois, New Jersey and California, which each lost over 100,000 Black people.

I cannot believe that the Republican Party has lost its moral compass and is now under the dictates of a man who never had a moral compass.

It appears that the GOP will punish anyone who does not fall into lockstep with the party.

It is a frightening time, and the only way I see clear is to vote for the person most qualified no matter the party affiliation.
