How Antioch woman’s hypnosis for personal health became a profession

For Antioch’s Stephanie Helberg, hypnosis started out as a path to healing her past but eventually became a way to help others in their journeys to restoration.

“Hypnosis and regression hypnosis have been around for probably 50 years,” said Helberg, 73. “It’s not as common as it should be because it’s amazing how it helps people who are ready to heal emotions that are keeping them stuck in patterns that are not helping them move forward in their lives.”

From a third generation born and raised in Reno, Nevada, Helberg said her family background was dysfunctional and filled with abuse.

“When I came to California, I ended up in a kick-and-punch marriage that I got out of, and through a very good friend I realized I needed to do the healing of the past so that I could move forward in a positive way,” she said.

As a 35-year project manager, Helberg began studying shamanism for her healing, which led her to study from apprentice programs held by shamanic experts Hank Wesselman, Michael Harrner and Sandra Ingerma.

“I studied hypnosis with a Buddhist master, and that led me to work with regression therapists in Portugal, Turkey and India,” said Helberg. “I have also studied with Delores Cannon. Many have asked how I found my teachers — and actually, they all found me as it came time for me to learn the next steps.”

Helberg created “Waves of Spirit” (wavesofspirit.com), her private practice, 17 years ago and has been a Level 2 practitioner in quantum healing hypnosis for 13 years. She’s also a consulting hypnotist, shamanic practitioner, Reiki therapist and crystal healer and works with past life regression, inner child reintegration and stress reduction. A hypnosis session is roughly two hours long and costs $200 per session.

Through hypnosis, Antioch’s Stephanie Helberg helps clients of her private practice, Waves of Spirit, work through past and sometimes painful obstacles in their lives in order to move forward. (Charleen Earley — for Bay Area News Group)

“I have developed a process to help people retrieve and integrate the parts suppressed,” said Helberg. “Symptoms of lost parts are anxiety, depression, lethargy, inability to make decisions and overreaction to situations. This really helps people step into their truth and start to heal those places that are like open wounds inside.”

Everyone is actually hypnotized every day, Helberg says.

“You are in a hypnotic state just as you are falling asleep, when you dream and as you are waking in the morning,” she said. “It is a state of relaxation.”

Contradicting misconceptions about hypnosis, Helberg said she does not make her clients bark like dogs or cluck like chickens, nor is she in control of them but rather the other way around.

“The client is in control, for it is their process,” she said. “I work with verbal, visual and different steps, depending on the client. There may also be a tapping technique, but it is driven by the client. Remember, the client is in control and I am just the tour guide to help the process with the words needed to assist them.”

Client Lori Pino, of Antioch, grew up in a military family and moved around a lot. She discovered Waves of Spirit through an online, small business networking platform called Alignable.

“I wanted to address any past trauma (sexual violation, family addiction issues, military family issue) that may be holding me back from moving forward with ease on my spiritual and career path,” said Pino, a Reiki master, holistic life coach and author.

She says her session with Helberg was tremendously beneficial.

“I found it very helpful for fully acknowledging, accepting and releasing my painful experiences,” she said. “Stephanie is very articulate, skillful, caring and mindful, as she holds a safe space for her clients while guiding them at their own pace.”

Pino said the one session was sufficient for tying up loose ends, since she’d already done a significant amount of personal work over the years.

“What she helped me realize is that I had minimized and therefore hadn’t fully healed from my experiences,” added Pino. “By probing deeper, allowing me as much time to process as I needed and facilitating an intentional release, she helped me close the gaps and tie in all the experiences, enabling me to follow the common thread throughout to completion.”

Married to Paul Helberg for 37 years, Stephanie has two grown kids, Miles Radmall and Stacey Radmall-Skelly, from her previous marriage and four grandkids. Paul Helberg, who has healed from quadruple bypass surgery — another story of its own — is one of her biggest fans.

“My husband is a great supporter of all I do, through the travel and training that I have chosen,” she said.
