Rookies make big impact as SF Giants’ homestand ends on positive note

SAN Francisco – Dozens of duffle bags were spread out all over the floor inside the Giants clubhouse as the team geared up for a challenging road trip this week with games against a pair of first-place teams.

The bags were also in front of the lockers of infielder Casey Schmitt, catcher Patrick Bailey, and reliever Ryan Walker, who, from all indications, won’t be going back to the minors anytime soon, particularly after the impact they had in San Francisco’s 7-5 win on Sunday over the Miami Marlins.

“I’m excited I made it to the road trip,” said Walker, who, along with Bailey, was selected from Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. “I’m excited to go see other stadiums.”

Bailey hit his first MLB home run and later added an RBI on a safety squeeze to finish an unforgettable weekend, Schmitt added two base hits to raise his average to .383 through 12 MLB games, and Walker earned his first big league victory in relief as the Giants finished their homestand with a 5-1 record.

J.D. Davis also homered, a two-run shot to left in the third inning, and later added a double to left to lead off the sixth as the Giants improved to 15-11 at home and 11-8 this month.

The Giants (22-24) now start a three-game set against the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins on Monday before they travel to face the NL Central-leading Milwaukee Brewers from Thursday to next Sunday.

The kids have done alright. So far, at least.

“You always have to expect the young players are going to have some ups and downs and some struggles,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said. “It’s always nice when they have the ups first because it kind of sets the tone and brings a lot of energy to the ballpark.

“If you ask me if I’m surprised, I’d probably say no, and mainly because of the pedigree, right? (Schmitt and Bailey) are first-round picks with great athleticism, tested power, good skills and equipped to do what they’ve done so far.”

Bailey’s first weekend in the big leagues was one he’ll carry with him forever.

Bailey, making his second career MLB start, pounded a belt-high fastball from Marlins starter Jesús Luzardo in the bottom of the second inning.

Bailey, a switch hitter batting from the right side, had seen four four-seam fastballs from Luzardo in the at-bat before he took the fifth one 423 feet over the left field wall. Per StatCast, the exit velocity was measured at 107.4 mph.

Bailey later added another RBI on a safety squeeze to bring home Mitch Haniger from third base. It was part of a two-run sixth inning that broke a 4-4 as the Giants improved to 15-11 at home and 11-8 this month.

Saturday, Bailey singled in the eighth inning for his first big league hit, one of three hits the Giants had in what became a 1-0 Marlins win. He made his MLB debut on Friday, catching the final three innings of San Francisco’s 4-3 victory over Miami.

“It’s crazy,” Bailey said. “To be able to kind of get all the milestones out in a weekend and just kind of settle in, it’s pretty cool.”

Bailey also applied the tag on an efficient five-throw rundown along the third base line as Marlins third baseman Jon Berti was caught trying to steal home on a double-steal attempt.

“Just a rollercoaster. Full of emotions,” Bailey said of the weekend. “After every day I felt just absolutely exhausted mentally and physically.”

Schmitt, who played third base Sunday, had an RBI single in the eighth inning and now has hit safely in 10 of 12 games since he was selected from Triple-A Sacramento on May 9.

Thairo Estrada also had an RBI and relievers John Brebbia, Ryan Walker, Jakob Junis and Camilo Doval threw a combined 4 2/3 innings for the Giants. Doval picked up his 12th save.

Giants left-hander Alex Wood still hasn’t thrown five or more innings in any of his six starts this season, as he was pulled after 4 1/3 innings. Wood was charged with four earned runs as he allowed six hits and collected five strikeouts.

Walker was selected by the Giants on Friday and anxiously waited to make his MLB debut. He got the call in the sixth inning and allowed three hits but no runs.

Walker’s wife, Alexis, is from San Francisco and she had her whole family at the ballpark.

“So when I got the call, I was like, ‘This is it. Let’s do it. Let’s see what we got,’” Walker said.

Walker, Bailey and Schmitt join a big road trip as the Giants enter Monday six games back of the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

“It just shows that the future is good, the future is promising and that we have a lot of capable guys, not just here but also in the minor leagues,” Walker said.

They’ll also be a part of the Giants’ first matchup against Carlos Correa, who nearly signed with San Francisco in the offseason. Correa and the Giants agreed in principle to a 13-year, $350 million contract, but the team backed out on the day of the planned introductory press conference after reviewing Correa’s physical.

After a similar agree-and-renege situation happened with the Mets, Correa re-signed with the Twins on a smaller deal — six years, $200 million. The shortstop has struggled so far for Minnesota, batting .206 with six homers and 24 RBI in 43 games.
