Warriors finally win a road game, beating the Rockets 121-108

HOUSTON — Finally. The Warriors snapped an 11-game road losing skid Monday night, beating the Houston Rockets 121-108.

Stephen Curry cheered while riding a stationary bike as the Warriors built their fourth-quarter lead up to 15 with about six minutes left. It didn’t matter that his teammates couldn’t hear him; he was ecstatic that Golden State was on track for a rare road win.

All Golden State needed to do was hold on. And while this team has been known to blow double-figure leads, the Warriors survived and won their first road game since Jan. 30.

“It feels really good,” Klay Thompson said. “It’s nice to snap an ugly streak like that. That’s gross.”

Curry scored 30 points and Thompson added 29 to keep the Rockets at bay. Jonathan Kuminga built off his strong showing in Memphis with another efficient night, going 7-for-9 from the field to lead the bench players with 17 points.

The start, however, wasn’t encouraging — for either team.

Both teams had a sloppy first half, combining for 25 turnovers. Still, the Warriors managed to go up 26-21 at the end of one for their first lead on the road after the opening 12 minutes since Feb. 2.

Curry went scoreless in the first and then found his groove in the second, scoring 15 points to help put the Warriors ahead by five at the break.

A scary collision between Curry and Jordan Poole in the third had Warriors fans holding their breath. Poole fell and hit the back of his head on Curry’s right leg, causing Curry to hop away before ultimately walking it off. He was examined by the team’s trainer on the bench before returning to the game, and scoring 11 points in the fourth.

After the game, Curry eased fans’ anxiety and said he was “fine.”

The Rockets remained within striking distance until a fourth-quarter surge by the Warriors pushed them ahead.

The Switchable Defensive Trio of Draymond Green, Anthony Lamb and Kuminga got key stops early. In one sequence, Poole, who had a team-high eight assists, picked off a Rockets’ pass and took it to the other side before feeing Kuminga for a dunk to cap off a 12-2 run by the visitors, putting Golden State ahead 102-89. The Rockets called a timeout, but there was no stopping the Warriors.

“Feels good,” Curry said of the win. “It’s one of those feelings, like, this is what you’re supposed to do, but just to walk off the court with a couple more smiles on our faces and something to show for it. We know we have to play better, no one’s really celebrating. It’s just a matter of learning lessons in winning hopefully and get ready for another big game Wednesday.”

Draymond Green called the Warriors’ focus level in the first half “pathetic” — as evidenced by the team’s 14 turnovers in the first two quarters. That was addressed at halftime, and Golden State would go on to commit only six giveaways the rest of the game.

Meanwhile, coach Steve Kerr credited the switchable defensive trio of Green, Anthony Lamb and Kuminga as being key in helping the Warriors’ create separation in the start of the fourth.

“We needed [this win], obviously,” Kerr said. “I actually felt like we played decently in the first three games of this trip. Lost all three but I liked the effort, I liked a lot of the execution. Ironically, I thought this was the worst of the four games that we played on this trip.”

“We had to come in tonight with a focus that unfortunately wasn’t there and that was the issue with the first half but we eventually got there.”

The Warriors are now 8-29 away from Chase Center and are sixth in the Western Conference standings — sitting a 1/2 game ahead of the Dallas Mavericks.

That makes Wednesday’s matchup between the Warriors and Mavericks in Dallas that much more interesting. The game has playoff implications with the winner walking away with the head-to-head tiebreaker.

“As a competitor, you relish in the moments of the most important games,” Thompson said. “We’re coming down to the home stretch and every game is so vital for playoff stakes, and it’s exciting times. Postseason, there’s nothing like it and these last [nine] games will be a great warm up for the most competitive basketball out there.”
