Steph Curry takes next step in rehab; Warriors feel rejuvenated after All-Star break

LOS ANGELES – Meek Mill blared from the speakers in the gym of Mo Ostin Basketball Center on UCLA’s campus Tuesday as players took turns taking shots after a long practice.

Stephen Curry laid out on a trainers table in the corner, where he was receiving treatment after being seen putting up some shots of his own — a small but promising development in his recovery from a leg injury.

The Warriors are back and well-rested after a much-needed six days away, and there was a rejuvenated vibe to them after they limped into the All-Star break at .500 and down four players.

“You can just tell from the warm-ups. Guys are talking, there’s a lot of smiles, music playing, there a lot of energy,” Kevon Looney said.

Added coach Steve Kerr, “I think everybody needed the break, and I think a lot of guys came in refreshed and recharged today and we had a really good practice so the break was needed.”

The break came at a good time for Curry, who’s sidelined indefinitely after partially tearing two lower-leg ligaments in a collision with a Mavericks player Feb. 4.

Curry spent his free time in the Bay and attended a pair of Stanford women’s basketball games. But he appears to be turning a corner in his recovery.

Curry returned to the court for the first time since he partially tore two lower-leg ligaments in a collision with a Mavericks player Feb. 4. Curry did some light, non-contact work on the side, Kerr said. The Warriors will wait and see how he responds to the increased workload Wednesday.

Curry is expected to be reevaluated when the team returns to the Bay on Friday, though an official return timeline remains murky.

With the Warriors sitting at 29-29 and ninth in the Western Conference standings, Golden State will need to jump a few teams to move out of the dreaded play-in tournament.

Kerr said the focus is getting players healthy. Tuesday’s practice was an opportunity to get the team back under one roof to break a sweat.

“Today was more about blowing it out after a week off,” Kerr said. “They just needed to play and get a ton of shots up. So they really blew it out and their chests were burning a little bit but tomorrow we’ll be more focused on what we need to lock in on the rest of the way.”

Klay Thompson said the pause in the NBA schedule a necessity for every player. He spent the down time swimming in the ocean and spending time with his family and beloved bulldog, Rocco. He called that time away “incredible.”

“Mentally, physically, spiritually, just everything I ever dreamt of,” Thompson said. “It was nice to have days off to relax.”

Note: Andrew Wiggins was noticeably absent from practice. After missing the last game against the Clippers for a personal reason, the Warriors said his timeline is up in the air as he deals with a personal matter.
