High School roundup: Monta Vista remains undefeated in girls basketball

No. 17 Monta Vista 52, No. 18 Mills 36

Varshini Peddinti scored 16 points as Monta Vista defeated host Mills on Friday night to remain undefeated.

The Cupertino school improved to 9-0. Mills fell to 5-2.

Vivian Ong added nine points for Monta Vista, which had seven players score.

Monta Vista coach Sara Borelli called it one of the strongest starts in her 22 seasons.

“They’re very humble girls,” Borelli said. “I’m always like, ‘You guys need to put a little swag and be proud of yourselves for what you did.’ What they’re doing is a great accomplishment.”

Eleven players returned from last season’s team, which won the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division title.

This season, the team was elevated to the stronger De Anza Division.

Monta Vista is using the first month to get ready for league play in January.

“I keep telling them, ‘Every game you can’t take anything for granted, we’ve got to learn from every game,’” Borelli said. “I still don’t think I’ve seen our best game yet.”

No. 4 Carondelet 67, Hillsdale 26

Carondelet has won three consecutive games after routing Hillsdale in the Notre Dame-Belmont tournament. Kamil Reid and Allie Cummins each scored 14 points and Keisha Vitalico had 10 assists for the winning side. Carondelet improved to 10-1. Hillsdale fell to 7-2.

Vanden 78, No. 19 Monte Vista 47

Monte Vista was unable to extend its winning streak to three games as it fell to Vanden in the Liberty tournament. Sarina Nagra (11 points), Nia Coleman (11 points) and Alyssa Rudd (10 points) led the way for Monte Vista (4-2).

California 41, Liberty 40

California, leading by 12 after three quarters, hung on to edge tournament host Liberty. Taylor Lim and Trinity Chu each scored 12 points and Zareena Mann had nine rebounds for California, which improved to 6-1. Liberty fell to 4-6.

Los Gatos 53, Pioneer 30

Nicole Steiner scored 25 points and Ashley Childers had 17 points in Los Gatos’ win over visiting Pioneer in a non-league game. Los Gatos improved to 4-2. Pioneer fell to 5-3.

Boys basketball

No.1 Archbishop Mitty 58, Alameda 27

Gavin Ripp led the way with 15 points as Mitty rolled past visiting Alameda in a non-league game. Eric Brown scored 11 points, Max Scharpf had 10 points and Nathan d’Abreu Noronha scored seven points for the winning side. Mitty improved to 6-0. Alameda fell to 4-1.

No. 2 Dougherty Valley 85, Alhambra 43

Dougherty Valley (8-0) continued its perfect start to the season in a rout of Alhambra (5-5) in a home non-league game. Connor Sevilla (17 points), Blake Hudson (13 points) and Aadi Malali (10 points) scored in double figures for Dougherty Valley. Matt Turnquist and Tyler Allan each scored nine points for Alhambra.

Vanden 61, No. 4 Campolindo 53

Campolindo, playing at home, fell to Vanden in a non-league game. It’s the first time since 2019 that the Cougars have lost back-to-back games. Logan Robeson (17 points, seven rebounds), Clay Naffziger (13 points) and Shane O’Reilly (11 points) scored in double figures for Campo (5-2).

No. 7 San Ramon Valley 77, Northgate 44

San Ramon Valley stretched its winning streak to seven games after beating Northgate in a home non-league game. Parker McClaughry (19 points), Will Ambidge (17 points) and Luke Isaak (17 points) led SRV in scoring. Seamus Deely added eight points and 10 rebounds for the winners. San Ramon Valley is 9-1. Northgate dropped to 1-5.

No. 14 Clayton Valley 52, San Leandro 42

James Moore led Clayton Valley with 20 points in a home tournament win over San Leandro. Jake King chipped in with 12 points for Clayton Valley. Myles Gilder scored 12 points for San Leandro. Clayton Valley is 6-1. San Leandro is 2-5.

Boys soccer

No.13 Archbishop Mitty 1, No. 1 De La Salle 0

Archbishop Mitty upset De La Salle at the De La Salle Showcase as sophomore striker Jonah Guardino came off the bench to score in the 84th minute off a counterattack. Mitty improved to 2-1. De La Salle is 1-1.

No. 14 St. Ignatius 1, University 1

St. Ignatius trailed 1-0 at halftime, but Bruno Chapman tied the game in the second half. The Wildcats improved to 2-0.

Mountain View 3, Milpitas 0

Mountain View coach Jim McGuirk won his 350th game when the Spartans beat visiting Milpitas 3-0 in a non-league matchup. Ali Edriis put Mountain View up 1-0 with one minute left in the first half. Carlos Alfaro and Luc Bortolato each added a goal in the second half. Mountain View improved to 5-0-1. Milpitas fell to 4-1.

Girls soccer

No. 7 Archbishop Mitty 1, San Clemente 1

Jordan Geis scored and goalkeeper Hailey Forman had four saves in Archbishop Mitty’s tie against San Clemente at the Tri-Valley Classic. Mitty is 2-0-3.

No. 11 Harker 3, Half Moon Bay 0

Harker (5-0) remained undefeated after beating Half Moon Bay (4-4) in a non-league game. Claire Anderson (two goals) and Mackenzie Blue (one goal) accounted for the scoring.
