Trey Tracker: Lance fails to inspire in 49ers’ season opening loss

It was anything but a storybook start to Trey Lance’s tenure as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

A flooded field and abysmal Niners execution will create a flood of abysmal takes on the young quarterback’s performance in the 49ers’ season debut, a 19-10 loss to the Bears.

To be clear, Lance was hardly inspiring in the downpour. His fourth-quarter interception set up the Bears’ third touchdown of the second half — capping a 19-0 run that lost the Niners the game. The Niners’ offense only saw bursts of rhythm against a Chicago defense that was selling out at the line of scrimmage.

The first-year starting quarterback was merely part of the 49ers’ prodigious problems on Sunday. San Francisco had 12 penalties — including four personal fouls — and some egregious defensive breakdowns. Those are more responsible for the loss.

But pair that with Lance’s play, and the Niners had one of the more embarrassing team performances in the Kyle Shanahan era.

Let’s go through Lance’s day:

Through The Air: 13-of-28, 164 yards, INT, 50.3 quarterback rating

On The Ground: 13 carries, 54 yards, long of 13

In The Moment: The 49ers had total control of the contest and a 10-0 lead that should have been much better. Lance went 7-of-18 in the second half and — regardless of the terrible conditions — provided little spark once the Niners fell behind.

What He Said: “I made too many mistakes. … Lot of stuff to clean up for sure for me. But still excited; still got my head up.”

What They Said: “It’s why they handed him the keys to the organization. He’s a mature dude.” – Trent Williams on Lance taking responsibility for the loss

Highlight Play: Lance had a handful of ace throws on Sunday, but this toss to Ray-Ray McCloud showed how special if the Niners’ offense can be if he is on his game. Unfortunately for the Niners, these moments were rare on Sunday.

Stock Report: Down.

There’s no way to sugarcoat it. The good was there, but it didn’t outweigh the bad on Sunday. Pair his performance with a collapse from every other aspect of the Niners’ operation, and you’ll have incessant out-of-house questions about San Francisco’s quarterback situation this week.
