Good news for EV riders as more Lithium is expected at Mandya, Karnataka

According to preliminary surveys by the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) on the limited surface of the Marlagalla-Allapatna area in Mandya District in Karnataka, there are 1,600 tonnes of Lithium resources present in the pegmatites. As per the sources, AMD is also exploring lithium in potential geological areas of the Yadgir district of the state. After Jammu, these explorations will provide a great boost to our EV sector. 

As per the news, the central government is ready to start the commercial exploration of lithium in Jammu and Kashmir and so, Karnataka is also hopeful for a new start. 

After the news about lithium reserves, between 2020 and February 2021, there were no significant steps taken by the related authorities. The new start has brought new hopes for a brighter future.

Although, experts are still not sure about the economic viability of the project. But, if it is worked out, then it will help our country in a great way as the Indian automobile sector is moving towards green growth through electric mobility.

Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Atomic Energy and Space, stated that the importance and quantity of valuable minerals like lithium in the Marlagalla-Allapatna area, Mandya district of Karnataka may only be confirmed after the successful completion of exploration. Henceforth, commercial exploitation plans of lithium can only commence after studying the social, technical, and economical feasibility of the project in the area.

Pralhad Joshi, The Union Minister of Mines gave a written statement in Rajya Sabha, which explained the Preliminary surface surveys and limited exploration of the subsurface by the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) showing the presence of 1,600 tonnes of lithium (inferred category) at Marlagalla area of Mandya district in Karnataka.”

On the basis of research papers on lithium availability, Mandya district Revenue officials initiated an inspection in villages around Srirangapatna in the Mandya district in February 2020.

Later, Venkatesh, the Deputy Commissioner, and his team visited Alapatna near Srirangapatna. The authorities inspected a few villages and are awaiting the Department of Atomic Energy’s reports.

He said that the Atomic Minerals Directorate’s researchers have found lithium reserves near Mandya. It has been estimated to have 14,100 tonnes in a small patch of land in Mandya and hence the Current Science journal published it as well.
