Cauley, Alexander, Harvey Henderson on saxophone, Michael Toles on guitar, Ronnie Gorden on organ, Willie Hall on drums, and subsequently lead vocalist Larry Dodson (previously of fellow Stax outfit the Temprees) made up the reformed band. For his album Hot Buttered Soul, the trio provided recording support for many significant Stax performers, notably Isaac Hayes.

Cauley quit the band in 1971, leaving Alexander, Dodson (vocals, vibes), Barry Wilkins, Winston Stewart, Henderson (tenor sax, flute), Charles “Scoops” Allen, and Alvin Hunter (drums) to produce the album Black Rock. After adding Lloyd Smith in 1973, the group underwent a musical reorientation in the 1970s and established a lucrative funk music career. In 1975, after the Stax/Volt label went out of business, the band joined Mercury Records.

The Funk Years

The “Shake Your Rump to the Funk” recording was entered into the R&B Top Five in 1976 by Dodson (vocals), Alexander (bass), Lloyd Smith (guitar), Allen (trumpet), Henderson (saxophone), Frank Thompson (trombone), Stewart (keyboards), and Mike Beard (drums).
