The bar-kays flying high on your Love blogspot have been creating music that allows people to stand and dance since the middle of the 1960s. Your hit sailed and welled. For more than 50 years, bar-kays have played a significant role in American music.

We’ll see the history behind the many bars soaring in love with them in this blog post. We’ll look at the band’s evolution, the song’s inspiration, and the addresses made to the audience over time. American funk group The Bar-Kays was founded in 1964. In the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, the group had a large number of singles that reached the top of the charts, such as “Soul Finger,” “Boogie Body Land,” and “Son of Shaft.”

Black Rock Years

The Bar-Kays started as a studio session band in Memphis, Tennessee, supporting well-known acts at Stax Records. They were trained for this job by Al Jackson, Booker T. Jones, Jr., and the members of Booker T. & the M.G.s before being chosen by Otis Redding to perform as his backing band in 1967. On April 14, 1967, they released their debut single, “Soul Finger,” which peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard R&B Singles chart and reached number 17 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On December 10, 1967, while attempting to land at Truax Field, Redding’s plane crashed into Lake Monona, close to Madison, Wisconsin, killing him as well as four other band members—Jimmie King (guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (electric organ), Phalon Jones (saxophone), Carl Cunningham (drums), and their partner, Matthew Kelly. Madison was to host Redding and the band’s next performances. Ben Cauley, a trumpeter, was the only person to survive the accident. The only other passenger on the plane carrying Redding was bassist James Alexander. Alexander and Cauley reorganized the team.

Cauley, Alexander, Harvey Henderson on saxophone, Michael Toles on guitar, Ronnie Gorden on organ, Willie Hall on drums, and subsequently lead vocalist Larry Dodson (previously of fellow Stax outfit the Temprees) made up the reformed band. For his album Hot Buttered Soul, the trio provided recording support for many significant Stax performers, notably Isaac Hayes.

Cauley quit the band in 1971, leaving Alexander, Dodson (vocals, vibes), Barry Wilkins, Winston Stewart, Henderson (tenor sax, flute), Charles “Scoops” Allen, and Alvin Hunter (drums) to produce the album Black Rock. After adding Lloyd Smith in 1973, the group underwent a musical reorientation in the 1970s and established a lucrative funk music career. In 1975, after the Stax/Volt label went out of business, the band joined Mercury Records.

The Funk Years

The “Shake Your Rump to the Funk” recording was entered into the R&B Top Five in 1976 by Dodson (vocals), Alexander (bass), Lloyd Smith (guitar), Allen (trumpet), Henderson (saxophone), Frank Thompson (trombone), Stewart (keyboards), and Mike Beard (drums). Flying High on Your Love, the group’s album that included “Shut the Funk Up,” was released in the fall of 1977. The song is described as a “near-perfect disco song punctuated by the funky horn triumvirate of Charles “Scoop” Allen, Harvey “Joe,” and Frank “Captain Disaster,” and is dominated by vocalist Larry “D” Dodson’s call to “get on up or just shut the funk up.” Between the late 1970s and 1980s, the ensemble reached its zenith as a funk band.

Move Your Boogie Body, Hit and Run, Freak Show on the Dance Floor, Certified True, and Struck by You are just a few of the singles they released (1989).

Larry “L.J.” Johnson replaced Sherman Guy, who had departed the band in 1983, on vocals and percussion. Just as the ensemble started to go more commercial, Charles Allen left. The 1980s saw The Bar-Kays continue to enjoy hits on R&B charts.

The band’s guitarist Marcus Price was murdered in 1984. Memphis police have never been able to solve the case.

Alexander was again the only original member when the band reformed in 1991 after a protracted hiatus in the late 1980s. Larry Dodson, Archie Love, Bryan Smith, and Tony Gentry joined the group in 1991.
