Ryan Shazier: 4 Top Lessons You Can Learn from Him

“Everyone wants their life and goals to go smoothly. But there’s always obstacles that’s going to present themselves. We just have to keep pushing, the end goal tends to be even better than we ever EXPECTED!” -Ryan Shazier.

This former American football linebacker, who achieved his dream of becoming an NFL professional player later discovered he was meant to do much more than just be an athlete. Ryan suffered a serious injury during a football match, and the doctors told him he might not be able to walk again, but Ryan turned a deaf ear to them.

After an amazing recovery Shazier learned how to walk again and he even was in the Steelers’ reserve list, but in 2020 he announced his retirement and started a new chapter in his life.

In this article the “Walking Miracle” Ryan will encourage you to pursue your dreams and make the greatest comeback of your life. So without further ado let’s get into Ryan Shazier: 4 Top Lessons You Can Learn from Him!

1. Faith without Work is Dead

You have to believe in yourself, of course! But repeating every single day “I am going to be a millionaire” and then wasting the whole day watching TV or scrolling on TikTok will not help you at all.

You have to take action and create a plan to reach your goals, go step-by-step, after them day after day. We all know people who just talk and then do the complete opposite, do not be like them! Set a goal and start working on it. Okay, now you have a plan, you are working as hard as you can but in the end it did not work…now what?

2. Ryan Shazier Says: Keep Moving, Keep Trying

Guess what, THAT IS NORMAL, and it will keep happening throughout your life. Ryan mentioned how after retirement he did not know what to do, and it took him a year to realize the sense of the next chapter in his life. He tried and tried, till he got involved in business and with the help of his friends, he did it.

Failure in something inevitable, but since you shouldn’t let success get to your head, you also shouldn’t let failure get to your heart. Ryan Shazier had to learn how to see his dream die, he touched the sky but did not reach heaven, but he let it go. He knew he was more than just a “linebacker.”

We can learn more from our defeats than from our victories, because everybody is your friend at the top but the bottom can be quite lonely. This takes us into the next lesson…

3. Watch Your Circle

When he was in the hospital, his mother was outside the room and every single time one of his friends came to visit, his mom would stop them and say: “Do not cry, do not show pity for him, be strong.” And do not dare say something negative, do not dare say “he will not make it” because you would regret that forever!

What I am trying to say with this is that you must surround yourself with people who want the best for you, people who will always tell you the truth, regardless of how hard and ugly it is, people who will be by your side from the beginning to the end. And if your “friends” are not like that…well, then it’s time for a change. How can we do this?

4. Be Vulnerable

In an interview with Ed Mylett, Ed mentioned how being vulnerable and open with others helped him make good relationships; more people than you think are willing to help you.

When you open your heart to others you run the risk of being hurt but you also run the risk of creating amazing things in life, so take the risk and see what happens but always remember Ryan’s words: Do not get angry nor harbor resentment, and instead of asking yourself “why me?” ask yourself: Why not me?

It’s comeback time! Start saying “why NOT me?” instead of “why me?” Show the doubters why you are the one, think positive and do not be afraid of thinking about the best-case scenario. Face your demons, your fears, your dragons and then grab those waiting treasures.
