If you were to look at most celebrities, specifically women, one would say that there is a certain “look” or Body type that is most common. This “small waist, big hips, big breast” look is making a lot women question their own bodies with them making the decision to go get plastic Surgery.

Platinum-selling rapper Latto, opened up recently about her decision to get Plastic Surgery while encouraging others to dig deeper within themselves for self-love before considering going under the knife.

On her podcast, the “Big Energy” hit rapper admits she “got a little work done” on her body. She continues, “One thing about it, if you going to do it, do it right. I’m going to do it right. I did it right.

Latto opened up even more about being criticized for getting surgery. “When I didn’t have my surgery, they’re like, ‘Oh, she shaped like her white side.’ … And then when I got the surgery, it is, ‘Oh she’s botched. Oh it’s too heavy.’”

The 24-year-old went on to explain that she wouldn’t recommend her sister, or any woman, to get surgery because it isn’t “a permanent fix.”

She continued, “I’m a very much advocate for women in general. Surgery, natural, whatever. However you want to play it, just make sure that’s what you are comfortable with, but I just think surgery is so popular now. That’s the most thing I be trying to remind you of. Don’t be so gullible for the social media traps and whatever, because you never going to be good enough for the outsider’s eye.” She adds, “You’re never going to win. So just find peace within yourself, whatever you want to do, do that.”

But Latto isn’t the only one going under the knife.

The number of African-Americans opting for plastic surgery has risen dramatically. Over 985,000 African-Americans underwent cosmetic surgery in 2009, a gain of 5 percent over the previous year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Per the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, between 2015 to 2019, the number of butt augmentation surgeries increased by 90.3% and the number of Black patients increased by 56%. Other statistics are more sinister, with reportedly one in 3,000 BBLs having resulted in death. Just this past December, Sucretta Tolliver, a Black woman from Chicago, tragically became the latest to die following a failed BBL procedure adding to more cries to ban the surgery.

It is common knowledge that many women get cosmetic surgery to get rid of insecurities that are sometimes caused by society’s pervasive beauty standards. For the past few years on social media, words like “hourglass” and “coke bottle” have been used to characterize a desirable female body. A tiny waist and large buttocks have felt like an unwavering beauty standard and this notion is strengthened by the number of celebrities who are willing to go under the knife to attain this body ideal.

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a mental health condition where one hyper-fixates over certain flaws their body may have. The body that everyone else sees is not necessarily the body they see when they look in the mirror. For a long time, the disorder mainly focused on white women, overlooking body image issues in Black women. All age groups are able to fall victim to body dysmorphia, and it could start at a very young age.

Where Does BDD Come From?

Growing up in society, there are often so many opinions of what the “perfect body” should look like. For young and impressionable minds, this could have dangerous affects which lead to the development of BDD. In the Black community specifically, it’s common that family members give their opinion (usually unsolicited) on your body. For example, you could hear something like, “You need some more meat on your bones.” Or on the other hand, you might hear
