Health tips for recovering from a serious injury

Recovery from any Injury can be difficult, especially if it is serious. You may find yourself needing to adjust to a new way of living with limited mobility or life-changing injuries.

You need to make sure you give yourself the best chance of recovery you need to take care of your physical and mental Health equally. Here are some tips to help you do just that.

Keeping your mental health in check

Sustaining an injury can have a huge mental toll on you. Not only will need to process the circumstances surrounding it, but you will also have to face the recovery process ahead of you.

Having a strong support system in place is a good foundation for your Mental Health. Your support system can be made up of medical professionals as well as friends and family. Therapists are an invaluable resource when you are working through a complex issue like this.

Controlling areas that you can will also help to keep the feeling of helplessness at bay. For example, you can keep on top of any paperwork including any personal injury claims you make. This will also help to focus your brain and keep it active.

You could also set some short-term and long-term goals. These do not have to be recovery-focused, especially if your physiotherapist or doctor is already setting you some. You could make these goals as fun as you like. For example, use the downtime to pick up a new hobby or get back into one you have neglected such as reading. Set a reading goal for a month or even a year. Again, it will give you something other than your injury to focus on.

Physical health matters too

You will be in constant contact with medical professionals, and they will be able to advise you on how much exercise you can do. You may have limitations that you can work around though but it is always best to consult them before you start.

If you have injured your leg, for example, you may not be able to go for a run but you could head to the gym and focus on your upper body and doing weights. Although this is a different form of exercise, it will still keep your body moving and your fitness levels in check.

Diet is a huge part of recovery so eat as healthily as you can. The odd takeaway is understandable as you recover but you will feel better if you eat better. Set up a rota with friends and family bringing you meals if cooking is a challenge for you.

Remember to listen to your body throughout this. You may find that there are activities that you could normally complete easily but are now a challenge. This is to be expected so try not to get too discouraged.
