Three important features of a syringe to understand are the size of the syringe barrel, the connection of the syringe to needle, and the size of the hypodermic needle tip.

What is a syringe barrel?  Simply put, the barrel of the syringe is the tube responsible for holding and dispensing the liquid it holds.  Each barrel will have two ends: one end will have a luer slip or luer lock tip.  The tip will allow a poly hub hypodermic needle to either “spin on” with a luer lock connection, or “press on” with a luer slip connection.  The other end of the syringe will be a perfect fit for the plunger.  The plunger is a plastic piece which inserts into the cyllinder of the syringe barrel.  It will have a rubber seal to eliminate the chance of leakage.  When the plunger is pulled back, a vacuum is created, and this aids in pulling the liquid or medicine from the vial into the syringe barrel.  When the plunger is pushed, the contents of the syringe barrel will be pushed towards the needle, through the needle, and will provide the injection or simply transfer the contents to another location for laboratory use (for example).  Lets back up the the Luer Lock and Luer Slip connection.  What does this mean and why would it be important to understand the difference?  A luer slip is a press on connection.  It is easy to understand that a connection that presses on is less secure than a connection that spins on.  Knowing this, lets consider why a connection might detach.  Functionally, a syringe is used by pulling and pushing on the plunger.  “pulling” the plunger creates a vacuum to aid in drawing up liquid, and “pushing” the plunger creates pressure to expel the contents of the syringe.  What considerations are important when selecting the right sized syringe and the right syringe to needle connection?  For the purposes of understanding a simple transfer of a syringe contents, from the syringe barrel to another container or for injection:  The thickness or viscosity of the medicine or liquid, the volume of each required measured dose, the speed required for the injection (if important),  the desired size of the needle.  Lets review how each of these factors effect:

thickness or viscosity:  the more viscous a liquid is, the more pressure will be required to push the plunger & the more pressure will be passed through the syringe-needle connection being either luer lock or luer slip.

the volume of each dose: the more liquid being passed through a syringe barrel also increased the amount of pressure required to expel the contents

the desired speed of injection:  Should a viscous liquid or a large amount of liquid need to be passed through a syringe into another container or for injection, both these factors would require increased pressure on the plunger as compared to a small volume of a thin or water-like liquid.

the size of the needle: As a needle become larger, the diameter which liquid can pass through also becomes larger, and this will allow for a faster transfer of fluids.  In comparison, a small needle with a smaller diameter would allow less liquid to pass through and therefore take more time to complete the same task.  Although there are certainly many options, sizes, brands of syringes available that will successfully complete the task, there might be an option that is superior to another.

Example 1: a viscous, thick liquid, 1.5 mL: similar to a home prescribed low testosterone therapy weekly injection:  Prescribed testosterone is relatively thick or viscous.  How would you theoretically ensure the syringe and needle do not detach, and that the contents of the syringe could be transferred with the least amount of discomfort?

1. check the volume per dose.  Syringes come in 1mL, 3mL, 5mL and larger sizes.  As the size gets larger, the pressure required to push the contents through the syringe barrel, through the needle tip, to its destination becomes more difficult.  If a dose of 1mL or less is required, a 1mL syringe is available.  If the amount is more than 1mL but = or less to 3mL, a 3mL syringe is available.
2. choosing a luer lock connection is a good choice.  The Luer Lock terminology described the connection at the tip of the syringe barrel at the point where the hypodermic needle or poly hub sterile needle will attach.  A luer lock is a spin on connection and is more secure than a luer slip press on connection.  *a luer slip syringe is very useful for oral medications for veterinarian purposes to quickly and accurately measure and administer pet medication dosages.
3. consider the needle tip size: Are you intending on using the smallest hypodermic sterile needle to make the injection as comfortable as possible?  If so, realize that a viscous medication might have difficulty passing through a very fine needle.  A possible solution is decreasing the size of the syringe barrel to allow for easier dispensing of the medication.  For example: an identical viscous medication passing through a 1mL syringe will be easier to administer than when using a 3mL syringe.  A second solution is to use a larger needle tip to allow the contents to flow more easily with less restriction through the needle tip.

Example 2: a water-like thin liquid .2mL:  A very small amount that is  very thin leaves little to trouble shoot.  A thin liquid will pass easily through any size needle tip.  The bigger the needle, the easier all liquid will pass.  The smaller the syringe barrel, the easier/faster the contents can be expelled.  Because a thin, small amount of liquid creates a relatively small amount of pressure during an injection or laboratory transfer of fluids, the luer lock or luer slip connection is not a big consideration.  Both Luer Lock and Luer Slip syringes would allow for easy transfer of a small volume of a thin liquid.

What size syringe is best for a specific use? 

When selecting the most appropriate size of syringe, meaning the size of the barrel of the syringe / the amount of liquid the syringe is able to hold, it might be ideal to choose the smallest syringe that will allow the full dose of medicine to be measured into one syringe.  Syringes come in a variety of sizes.  Small syringes hold less than 1/2cc while large syringes can hold 60cc or more.  There are some features that all medical syringes share.  Disposable syringes are sterile, individually wrapped, intended for one use, have printed increments of measure along the barrel for easy measuring, and have either a luer slip or luer lock needle tip which will allow a hypodermic needle to be attached if needed.

Why does using the right size matter?

Syringes come in a variety of sizes ranging from a very small syringe to a very large syringe.  If a very small amount of medicine is needed for an injection with a medical syringe, a small 1/2cc syringe or 1cc syringe is available.  Lets review some basic volumetric measuring facts.  Lets say you have two syringes: one that holds 1/2cc and one syringe that holds 1cc.  You are asked to measure out .4cc with both a 1/2mL syringe and a 1mL syringe.  The full volume of .4cc will certainly fit in both a .5cc syringe and a 1cc syringe but you should notice that the 1cc syringe holds twice as much as the .5cc syringe.  The 1cc syringe will appear the same and look very much like the .5cc syringe.  Upon closer inspection you might realize the size of the 1cc syringe is identical in length, plunger, and needle size, but the diameter and circumference of the Insulin Syringe is larger in the 1cc syringe.  This is to account for holding twice as much liquid in a similar design and size syringe.  How will this effect the accuracy of measuring?  Because the larger syringe has the same amount of measurements along the barrel and twice as much liquid is held within the syringe barrel, the 1cc syringe will be less accurate than a measurement completed by using a .5cc syringe.  Using a smaller syringe results in greater accuracy and less waste.

Insulin Syringes have fixed needle tips.

Conventional syringes, luer slip syringes, luer lock syringes, oral syringes have tips that allow a hypodermic needle to attach and detach.

What does this mean?

When selecting the right syringe, you may not need a needle tip.  Many veterinarian syringes are luer slip.  A luer slip syringe has a cone shaped tip which allows a hypodermic needle to press on firmly, but can also be used for administering oral pet medications.

A luer slip syringe can also be used with a needle tip but the connection of syringe to needle is not as securely attached as a luer lock syringe.  A luer slip tip allows a hypodermic needle to press onto the syringe tip.  For many uses, a luer slip syringe is acceptable.  A luer slip syringe might be less desirable in treatment that requires the syringe to remain attached, or if there is any worry the needle tip might come apart.

A luer lock syringe has a connection that allows the hypodermic needle to spin onto the threads in the luer lock syringe tip.  The grooves and ridges in the tip of the syringe fit perfectly with the groove along the outer edge of the base of a hypodermic needle.

How does the size of the syringe effect the pressure in the syringe?

As a syringe size increases, more force must be placed on the plunger to move the contents through the tip of the syringe.

How does the size of the hypodermic needle effect the pressure in the syringe?

As force is placed on the syringe plunger, the contents of the syringe are moved towards the tip of the syringe.  For pet medications administered through a luer slip syringe, one would push on the plunger and the contents would be advanced and ultimately pushed through the luer slip’s cone shaped tip into the animal’s mouth.  The hole at the luer slip tip is large and the contents would not have any restrictions in movement.  When a needle tip is attached, or pressed on to a luer slip tip syringe, the contents of the syringe must be passed through a much smaller opening present in the very distal end of the hypodermic needle.  Hypodermic needles range in size from very small ( a very fine needle), to very large needles which allow for fast transfers of fluid.

Are there any other options for a small needle with a removable tip?

Yes, as we mentioned for a .5cc, the only option Cheappinz can offer for syringe and needle is the Insulin Syringe which will have a fixed needle. But, as mentioned, the 1cc syringe is still a very small syringe and this has multiple options. Insulin Syringes are available to purchase from Cheappinz in both the 1cc and .5cc sizes. Insulin Syringes also have a variety of sizes which allows for very small needle tips in varying lengths and gauge (or thickness of needle).

Besides the Insulin Syringe, what other option is available for a 1cc syringe?

There are two options available for the 1cc syringe which would afford you the ability to remove the needle tip to attach a fresh, new and sharp needle for use. In addition to a sharp needle, the type of “syringe barrel to needle tip” attachment is something to consider. For a thin, water like medicine or fluid, any attachment of syringe and needle will be acceptable. This would let both the luer lock and the luer slip syringe work equally well. For a viscous or thick medicine or fluid, a luer lock is the better choice as this connects the syringe barrel to the needle tip with a spin on connection very similar to the way a soda bottle cap spins on. The luer lock connection is secure, dependable, and will not come apart. What about the luer slip? A luer slip describes a syringe to needle attachment that simply presses the two pieces together. This would be accomplished by having a protruding cone like end of the syringe barrel fit perfectly with a needle tip which would press on snugly. Because a luer slip connection is simply a press on connection, it could possibly detach if there is enough force required to press the medicine or liquid through the barrel and needle tip. This would occur with a thick viscous medicine such as any oil based medicine, and such a thick liquid would possibly not be well suited for this press on connection. For example a syringe with testosterone for HRT injections would describe a thick medicine that would be more suitable for a luer lock syringe.

Lets discuss the size of the needle. Firstly, lets learn about the needle. Syringes come with needles attached and also with no needle. Needles can also be purchased alone with no syringe barrel. A syringe needle is exactly as it sounds. It is the sharp, pointed hollow needle at the distal end of the syringe, and is intended to pass through a rubber stopper in a medicine vial, inject medications through skin into a human or animal, and is also used for laboratory and scientific purposes.

How do you know what size a needle is?

Needle sizes are numbered. A needle will have a gauge, which describes the thickness or diameter of the needle. A very large needle will have a number like: 16g, 18g, 20g. These needle sizes are appropriate for quick measuring of fluid medicine or could be used for quick transfer of fluids in any laboratory or scientific application. As the number used to identify the size of a syringe gets larger, the size of the needle become thinner. This is the opposite of what you may expect.

What are the most common sizes used?

The size of needle used is really a matter of preference, but most people prefer to use a needle which is as small as possible to accomplish the task successfully and with the least amount of discomfort.

Some needle tips are used primarily for measuring or transferring fluids. Cheappinz is not giving advice but simply discussing size of needle tip and its most common uses. The most common sizes used for measuring or transferring fluids are sizes 16g, 18g, 19g, 20, and sometimes 21g. What sizes are commonly used for injections? Needle sizes 21g, 22g, 23g, 25g, 27g, 30g are all suitable for injections. It is true that even the larger needles typically used just for quick measuring of medicine and liquids could be used as well, but the higher the number of syringe needle size, the smaller the needle thickness. So, for example: a 20g is much thicker than a 30g. What are the most common sizes? Sizing comes down to a matter of preference, but we notice the most common requested sizes are 22g, 23g, and 25g needle sizes. What about the length? A needle length is another attribute that can be chosen. Needle length for Insulin Syringes are often ½ inch or 5/15 inch, and separate needle tips which fit a variety of syringe sizes come in 1 inch, 1 ½ inch, 5/8 inch, ½ inch and possibly a few other less common sizes.

Why would I chose one needle size over another?

Needle size can be subjective. A variety of sizes could safely and effectively work for a variety of required uses. We now know about the best size syringe or syringes for a task, but what about the needle size. Some factors to ask while selecting a needle size for you are:

What medication is being administered? Meaning, is it thick or thin. If its watery, for example, a very small needle tip could be used or a very large needle tip if speed of administering is more important than comfort. If its a thick medication, such as an oil based HRT testosterone replacement, a larger needle such as a 23g, 22g, or 21g would be more sensible. Remember as the numbers get smaller, the needle size get bigger.
What connection does your needle and syringe have? Is it a luer slip connection: a press on connection? Or is it a luer lock connection: a secure spin on connection. If its a thin liquid passing through the syringe and needle, any connection would be acceptable, but if you only have access to a luer slip connection due to shortages or the supplies your pharmacy or clinic has on hand, it might be sensible to consider the thickness or thinness of the medicine being used and any difficulty it would have pressing through a very small needle. If a thick medicine is pushed with a significant force through a very fine needle tip, the result might be an unexpected and unwanted detachment of the syringe and needle.
Is your goal the most pain free option? If so, the larger the number the more fine the needle tip will be. For example: a 25g, 27g, 30g are all very small needle tip sizes, but the 30g needle tip size is the very smallest of the 3 example needle sizes listed.

Are their different quality of syringes used for COVID immunization injections?
