What Are the Stages of Migraines?

Migraines are a type of Headache disorder characterized by recurrent, severe headaches that can be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. They often occur in stages, though not everyone experiences every stage, and the intensity and duration can vary from person to person. Here are the typical stages of a migraine:

Prodrome (Premonitory Phase):

  • This stage occurs before the actual headache and can last for hours or even a day or two.
  • Symptoms may include changes in mood (such as irritability or depression), food cravings, fatigue, increased thirst, and neck stiffness.
  • Some individuals might also experience visual disturbances, known as an “aura.” This can involve seeing flashing lights, blind spots, or zigzag lines.

Aura (Not Everyone Experiences This Stage):

  • An aura is a temporary neurological disturbance that can precede or accompany a migraine.
  • Visual disturbances are the most common, but auras can also affect other senses and motor skills. For example, some people may experience difficulty speaking or moving.

Headache (Attack Phase):

  • This is the most intense phase of a migraine and can last from a few hours to several days.
  • The headache is typically characterized by a throbbing or pulsating pain, often on one side of the head. It can be severe and debilitating.
  • Other symptoms during this phase may include sensitivity to light, noise, and odors, as well as nausea and vomiting.

Postdrome (Recovery Phase):

  • Also known as the “migraine hangover,” this stage occurs after the headache subsides.
  • It can last from a few hours to several days, and individuals may feel exhausted, weak, and have difficulty concentrating.
  • Some people may experience mood changes, such as feeling euphoric or irritable.

It’s important to note that not everyone with migraines will experience all of these stages, and the severity and duration of each stage can vary. Additionally, some individuals may experience a migraine without any warning signs (prodrome or aura) and progress directly to the headache Phase.
