What you need to know before open a PT studio

What you need to know before opening a PT studio

Ken Z (People who’ve been in the fitness industry since 2012 and learning every day.)

1. Studio theme

That’s right, that’s the first thing you need to decide. You don’t consider which type of Studio is the most profitable especially for your first studio. You do what you are good at. If you are a powerlifter, don’t do a cross-fit studio, if you are a bodybuilder, don’t do a rehabilitation studio. You are only gonna make a profit when you are doing something you are good at. You are only gonna enjoy the job when you are doing something that you are interested in.

In 2022, there are a lot of different types of PT studios,  powerlifting, and bodybuilding are the most traditional and common PT studios. Crossfit studio like F45, CrossFit those are quite popular in recent years as well. There are a few more different types of studio like pilates, strong man etc.

2. Location

Location is extremely important for this kind of Business. Several bullet points before you make the decision.

  • Is there any similar nature business around there?
  • Population in this area and age distribution in this area. Eg. in an area that live most senior people better open a rehabilitation centre, not a strong man studio.
  • Area income level. Opening a luxury 1-to-1 studio in brownstone would be better than opening in a rural area.
  • If you have to attend the business every day don’t pick somewhere two hours away from your home, otherwise, you will hate your job.
  • It’s an internet world so don’t worry if your studio is not on the main street.

3. Premise

Size

What Equipment do you need for your studio? How many clients you are going to take at the same time? Any future plans that need a bigger area on the same premise?  Once you figure out those you should know the exact size you need.

Carpark

Make sure you have enough parking spots for your client.

Price

The rent should be your biggest expenditure, estimate your income and select one that will not bring you too much street. Since everyone has a different situation It’s hard to give an exact number to be the reference. However, if you do need advice on this please reach out to us.

4. Marketing

Do marketing before you open the business. If you already have your own network that would be the easiest way to get the initial customer, If you don’t, premarketing is necessary. And after you opened your business you still need to do marketing consistently until it hits your capacity. If you are planning to expand your business, expand before it hits your maximum capacity.

Brochure

Make some impressive brochures and attend nearby premises to say hi. Don’t try to sell them anything unless they ask. If you can have a little chat with them as neighbours that’s a really good start already. A little gift like a keychain or a warm smile can increase your success rate a lot.

Google ad

Google ad is the most popular ad and it’s very simple to use, no matter what kind of studio you are going to open, spend a bit of money on google ad you will see the return.

Social media

Since there are a lot of different social apps, you can choose the one that has most of your target audience or try all of them, and see how it goes.

Keypoint for online advertising

Keyword, repeat your feature, such as 1 to 1, luxury studio, professional powerlifter coach, something like that. Any medal you got, any achievement you’ve done, any computation you participated.

Location, easy one, you don’t promote your ad to NSW when your business is in Melbourne.

Audience, all online advertising platforms will give you a selection such as only promoting to people who age between 20-30, male or female, their interests, etc. narrow down the audience group so you don’t waste your money on people who 99% chance that won’t join your studio.

If you have any questions about marketing we have a specialist available only for our members.

5. Equipment

There are so many brands in the market, there is no best one, but there is one that fits you.

In most cases. Consider your budget and what your customer gonna like. Most people that include advanced trainers they might don’t know about gym equipment brands at all. What they know is that the hack squat machine in xx gym feels good, that curved treadmill makes cardio interesting. The equipment in xx gym looks too old, I might get tetanus if I scratched there. So your job is to find equipment that is slap-up, sturdy, works ergonomically and will not make you sleep on the street. That is Nirvana.

In some cases like if you are targeting professional bodybuilders to be the clients you need to get the most well know brand like Technogym, they may not the best machine but they are the most famous. And you are not only charging them $50/h. So follow that method, always think about what customers would like to see and use, not yourself.

Furthermore, after you decide which brand you are going with, think about priority. You don’t have to purchase everything at once, get all the necessary equipment first. Add second priority stuff piece by piece, may be someday you will find you need more cable machine because you don’t want to adjust the pulley position every min because two of your client has a different height. Maybe you find out you need a proper seated row and lat pull-down machine because the cable machine is actually not designed for those movements.  You and your client will find what you need to acquire day by day.
