STARTING SOLID FOODS: BABY FIRST FOODS

When baby is enter in six month you can start introducing solids to your baby. Introducing solids to baby is very exciting task and developing milestone. Around 5 months end now baby requires more nutrients, breast milk alone doesn’t provide enough nutrients, but breast milk still continue to be most vital source of nutrition.

SIGNS THAT YOUR BABY IS READY FOR SOLID FOOD :

  • Baby can sit properly without support.
  • Baby is showing interest when you are eating in front of her.
  • Baby is eager to chew.
  • Baby does not throw the small quantity of food out of tongue when we give.
  • Baby wakes up more frequently at night then before for feeding.
  • Baby has lost his natural tongue thrust reflux at six months. So, now baby is able to keep food in her mouth.

 FIRST FOOD FOR BABIES

Each baby is different .So before starting solids first consult with your doctor for advice and start solids to baby. Following food chart is helpful to you for starting solids .Following chart is according to my doctor advice which I followed for my baby.

6th month (1st week): You can give toor dal water, moong i.e. green gram water or Rice water in first week of 6th month. You can also add some jaggery and ghee (clarified butter) to above water. You can also give some spoon of boiled water after cooling the water.

6th month (2nd week): You can give above water one time plus fruits puree. Fruits like apples, bananas, mango, chikoo and peaches can be given pureed with some boiled water.

6th month (3rd week): You can give fruits puree plus vegetable puree such as potatoes, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin etc. as puree and you can also give Raab, Khichdi and yogurt(well crushed).

6thmonth (4th week): Give above food 4 to 5 times a day .So baby fed properly. Start giving your baby just 2-3 spoon twice a day. At this stage baby’s stomach is still small and baby can eat only small amount of food in each meal. Give time to baby to adjust to these new foods. Don’t force feed her.

7 to 9 months: You can give now vegetable soup, cereal porridge, yogurt, butter, Ragi porridge suji halwa, Wheat Shiro, Raab, Khichdi, churma (kind of roti ladoo).

9 to 12 months: You can give now chapati or roti dipped in dal, dal and rice, boiled vegetable salad, mashed fruits and combination of mashed fruits, curd khichdi, oats khichdi, besan flour items, Lassi/Chas etc.

TIPS WHEN INTRODUCING SOLIDS.

1     Never introduce more than one food at a time when starting solids to your baby.

2     If you find any allergy symptoms when you starting a new food to your baby then stop feeding.

3     Always wash your hands before preparing food for your baby.

4     Sterilize all the vessels for 10 minutes in hot water.   

So, I shared my experience as per my journey and I am Gujarati pure vegetarian so these chart does not include non-vegetarian items for baby.
