The Best Nighttime Skincare Routine for Every Skin Type

Do you want to master your nighttime skincare routine? Follow these tips to craft an incredibly effective skincare routine for the pm.

Nothing beats the joy of indulging in an elaborate Nighttime Skincare Routine after a long day. From environmental aggressors and pollution to UV exposure, your Skin goes through a lot during the day and is in protection mode. However, as you sleep, your skin actively works to restore and repair itself. Therefore, it is crucial to have an effective pm routine in place for healthy and happy skin. Moreover, applying skincare products at night can lead to better absorption and results due to increased skin permeability. Are you wondering how to get the most out of your nighttime skincare routine? Here’s how to curate an effective pm skincare routine for your specific skin type.

Start with a deep cleanse

A thorough cleanse to wash away all the dirt and grime accumulated throughout the day is the foundation of any nighttime skincare routine. For a deep cleanse, I recommend double cleansing your face at night. It will get rid of sebum, dirt, and pollution and leave your skin squeaky clean for the next steps.

  • Oily skin: If you have oily skin, I recommend an oil-dissolving cleanser. Look for a formula infused with oil-combatting ingredients like tea tree oil and aloe vera that can regulate sebum production. You can also opt for products with salicylic acid to prevent clogged pores.
  • Dry skin: People with dry skin need to exercise caution while picking a cleanser for their nighttime skincare routine. Steer clear of harsh formulas that can strip off the natural oils and leave your skin parched. Instead, opt for gentle, non-foaming products formulated with hydrating ingredients.
  • Combination skin:  If you have combination skin, it is crucial to find a balance between oil control and hydration. I recommend choosing gel-based cleansers that contain hydrating ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Apply a potent serum

Since your skin absorbs the products better at night, it is vital to add a potent serum to your nighttime skincare routine.

  • Oily skin:  If you want a healthy and radiant complexion minus the oily sheen, I recommend incorporating a lightweight hydrating serum into your skincare routine. A niacinamide serum can work wonders to regulate oil production and improve the overall health of your skin. You can also use a salicylic acid serum twice a week to gently exfoliate your skin and keep breakouts at bay.
  • Dry skin: If you have dry skin, you need to deliver an extra dose of hydration, especially during the nighttime, to keep your skin looking healthy and plum the next day. Try using a hyaluronic acid serum because it is super-hydrating and effectively replenishes and retains cell moisture.
  • Combination skin: If you combine skin, you can add vitamin C serum to your nighttime skincare routine. Packed with antioxidants, it will repair your skin and give you a radiant complexion. You can also use a gentle lactic acid formula on your T-zone to remove excess oil.

Incorporate retinol into your routine

Retinol is one of the best ingredients that you must add to your nighttime skincare arsenal for a youthful and clear complexion.

  • Oily skin: People with oily skin can benefit a lot by adding retinol to their nighttime skincare routine. It exfoliates your skin and regulates sebum production, thus keeping pesky breakouts at bay.
  • Dry skin: Using retinol can be a bit tricky if you have dry skin as it is known to cause flakiness and dry patches. However, you don’t have to skip this potent ingredient altogether. If you have dry skin, integrate retinol gradually into your routine and start with a low-concentration formula, like 0.2% or 0.3%. You can also opt for retinol creams as they keep your skin hydrated.
  • Combination skin: If you have combination skin, it is advisable to go for a retinol serum to avoid adding heaviness to your skin. You can also opt for retinol formulations that contain skin-loving ingredients like ceramides.

Replenish your skin with a hydrating moisturiser

No nighttime skincare routine is complete without a hydrating and revitalising moisturiser.

  • Oily skin: Many people with oily skin tend to skip moisturiser to avoid the greasy feeling. However, it is crucial for skin hydration and the health of your skin barrier. I recommend opting for lightweight, gel or fluid-like formulas that quickly absorb into your skin.
  • Dry skin: If you have dry skin, slathering a layer of thick, nourishing moisturiser can work wonders for you. For your pm moisturiser, I recommend looking for emollient products formulated with hydrating ingredients like shea butter and ceramides.
  • Combination skin: Since this skin type tends to be dry in some areas and oily in others, you need to pick a moisturiser that can deliver a generous dose of hydration without clogging your pores. I recommend gel-based, non-comedogenic moisturisers with ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
Boost your skin health with an overnight mask

To give your skin some extra TLC, apply a hydrating overnight face mask before hitting the bed.

  • Oily skin: Look for light formulations with ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide that nourish your skin without leaving a sticky residue. You can also benefit from overnight masks that contain oil-banishing ingredients like salicylic acid.
  • Dry skin: Quench your skin’s thirst with an ultra-nourishing overnight face mask. Products with emollients like shea butter and squalene can be a great addition to your nighttime routine.
  • Combination skin: If you have combination skin, I recommend picking multi-tasking masks that can manage oil production while hydrating and soothing your skin. Formulas that combine powerhouse ingredients like vitamin C and niacinamide can work wonders for this skin type.
