How To Care For Your Olive Wood Products

Tags: olive bowl

Olive wood is a beautiful hardwood that has a unique grain that is reminiscent of marble. Olive wood makes beautiful bowls, cutting boards, utensils, and pretty much anything you can imagine.

Each bowl or cutting board is made from a branch or trunk of an old tree, which makes no two pieces identical.  As artisans make the bowls, each bowl will have its unique shape and grain.  There will be invariable differences, but that is what makes these bowls so special.  They are individually made by hand for your enjoyment.

An important fact to remember is that when you get your olive wood product in your home, it does need some care, especially if you use it often.  The olive wood is a living piece of art in your home and when it gets in water, it can dry out.

Here are some tips to keep your olive wood looking fabulous for years to come.

  1. Only hand wash, never put in the dishwasher. Once washed, dry immediately. Do not let the olive wood air dry.
  2. Oil the olive wood regularly. Experts don’t agree on the type of oil which means to me that any oil will work.  In Italy, my supplier insists on seed oil, like sunflower oil, In Tunisia, they use vegetable oil (which is a seed oil) other experts say olive oil, or food-grade mineral oil.  Whatever the oil, make sure it’s fresh and not old. Smell it and make sure it doesn’t smell rancid.
    1. Use a soft cloth and rub the oil on the product.
    2. Let the product sit and absorb the oil for an hour or two
    3. Then using a soft cloth, rub the excess oil off
    4. Store as usual.
    5. When the olive wood looks dry or starts to lose its luster, oil it.
  3. If you want to disinfect your utensils – cover them with hydrogen peroxide for 15 minutes and then dry thoroughly.

I hope these tips are helpful and you enjoy your olive wood for years to come.

Ciao for now,

RoseAnne
