What is Bian stone?

Bian Stone, also known as needle stone or engraved stone, refers to a tool used to puncture acupoints to treat diseases with stones. The medical technique uses Bianstone to treat diseases is called the Bianstone therapy technique. 

The origin and development of Bian stone therapy

Bian stone is a therapeutic tool produced in the Stone Age, with names such as “medicine stone,” “Wei stone,” “needle stone,” etc. It was a widely used therapeutic tool before the Qin and Han dynasties.

Bian stone therapy originated in the Stone Age. As early as in primitive society, when people were fighting against nature, they used various stone tools to make Bianstone tools and beat and rubbed some parts of the body to heal pain and disease. 

When the ancestors fell ill, they grabbed a stone, pressed and rubbed the affected part, punctured, and scraped. After doing this, the pain is sometimes relieved. 

The unearthed cultural relics show that in the middle and late Stone Age, Bianstone therapy has developed to a considerable level in both techniques and tools. People also imitate “stone cooking” and place hot stones on certain body parts to relax tendons, activate blood, relieve pain and eliminate fatigue. 

Since then, this experience therapy has gradually merged with theories of meridians and acupuncture points to form an independent medical technique. 

Bian stone therapy originated earlier than moxibustion and earlier than metal needles. It has a long history in the history of human treatment. 

Archaeology divides the era of human use of stone tools as production tools into two stages. 

The former stage is the Paleolithic Age, and the latter stage is the Neolithic Age. 

The Paleolithic period lasted about two to three million years. At that time, humans used some kinds of relatively rough needles and moxibustion and no Bianstone was used.

Bian stone has been lost since the Eastern Han Dynasty. 

Since the Eastern Han Dynasty, although the non-drug therapy of traditional Chinese medicine has continued to develop, its content is mainly moxibustion, acupuncture, etc. 

After thousands of years of development, the Bianstone technique disappeared in the Eastern Han Dynasty. According to historical data, the reason why the Bian stone technique was lost was that the quality of the best stones for making Bianstone was lacking.

Rediscovery of Bianstone Therapy

There are many records of Sibin pumice in history, among which the earliest record was in “Yu Gong” in “Shangshu” during the Warring States Period. 

Among them, it is recorded that in the legendary period of the ancient Great Yu, China was divided into nine states; among them only Xuzhou was marked as the “Sibin music stone.” It should have been very precious at the time; otherwise, it would not have been named and the tribute was only owned and used by the emperor. 

The stone material used for making it is also named “Sibin Pumice Stone.” 

In the days of Emperor Yu, 4,100 years ago, it was a tribute and an artifact used for sacrificial worship.

It was a Buddhist and Taoist instrument, a Confucian ritual instrument, and a braided fragrance composed of multiple pieces of fragrance. The chimes and bells became the musical instruments that symbolized the dignity of the emperor. 

In 1978, 13 black stone pieces with regular shapes were excavated in the ancient tomb of the First Warring States Period in Shandong, two of which were broken. 

Appraisal by relevant experts: the stone is from the Zhou Dynasty and is a national first-class cultural relic. 

In late, Mr. Yang Lingzi, a music teacher from Shandong Province, worked tirelessly to find the Sibin pumice stone in the Sishui River Basin. The two braided fragrances prepared with it, the percussion sound is beautiful and pure, the sound penetrates the vast sky, and the reverberation is wrapped, which is wonderful.

After a large number of scientific research and clinical trials, the relevant national authoritative departments tested, the medical experts determined: Sibin pumice stone is the stone for making ‘Xin music,’ and it is also the best stone for making Bian stone.

How is Bianstone produced?

According to the research by the scientists of China Earthquake Administration and the geological exploration of origin, the scientists put forward the meteorite impact theory. 

Sixty-five million years ago, a special meteorite hit the southwestern area of Shandong, and the meteorite hit the surface rock layer and exploded. In the high temperature, high pressure, and plasma environment, the interstellar material and the surface rock layer blended and penetrated each other, and finally fell on the surface to form pumice. That is Sibin pumice. 

Sibin pumice stone is the earliest named stone in China. The ‘Xin instrument’ (the ancient musical instruments and artifacts for the royal family) made of it is called Sibin stone.

It was a tribute more than 4,000 years ago, and it was made of it. The medical tool is Bian stone.

Lou Huajun, a geologist who talks about the “explosion”, believes that after years of research, 65 million years ago, an iron meteorite with a diameter of about 10km hit the southwestern area of Shandong, causing a huge impact centered on Juye. 

According to this theoretical analysis, geophysics researcher Professor Geng Naiguang believes that the “crater” radius is less than 60km, and the “crater lip” will spread farther to the Taiyi Mountains. 

Professor Geng said: “Pumice is produced at the moment of the big bang, thrown into the air under high temperature and high pressure, and the plasma absorbs the explosives from the star and scattered to the surface to form pumice. During the rapid cooling process, a microcrystalline structure is formed.

This is a masterpiece of creation under special conditions. Sibin should be the “lip edge”, researchers have seen many phenomena that are consistent with the “big bang” theory: for example, the collected pumice stones are mostly scattered irregularly, with uneven thickness and attached state, etc. 

The thinnest ones are only a few centimeters, and the thick ones are squeezed into blocks.

The common features of this type of pumice stone are that they all have opposite sides. The “positive” side is generally smooth and more streamlined, and the “back” side (the side attached to the rock) is uneven and honeycomb-like. 

Physical and chemical properties of Bian stone
