With the legalization of Marijuana becoming more common in the United States, some weird and even outdated laws have floated to the surface. From regulating the size font that can be used on signs to banning marijuana transportation by skateboard, the laws really have to be seen to be believed. Take a look at 14 of the weirdest marijuana laws found across the United States.
No Sharing: In some places, it is illegal to share your marijuana with others. For example, in Washington state, sharing marijuana is considered a crime.
Forbidden Cannabis Names: Some regions have specific rules about what you can and cannot call your cannabis products. In Oregon, for instance, it’s prohibited to use the term “candy” in the name of any marijuana product.
Unique Packaging Requirements: Several places mandate distinct packaging for marijuana products. For example, in California, all cannabis products must have tamper-evident and child-resistant packaging with large warning labels and must contain a large warning emblem or label.
Check the Yellow Pages: In Delaware, print and broadcast advertising are not allowed. Instead, Medical Marijuana-related advertising is only permitted in directories and phone books.
No Sniffing the Product: In California and Washington, cannabis products must be sold completely sealed in individual packages. This means the customer can’t smell, hold, or closely inspect the product before deciding which one to purchase. The packaging still shows the THC content and terpene
Lights Out: Neon and illuminated signs can really attract attention. But don’t look for such lit signs hanging at medical marijuana dispensaries in Connecticut because all illuminated signs are forbidden in the state for dispensaries.
Don’t Fill Up on Dessert: Edible medical marijuana products are legal in some states. If you live in Maine and have a doctor’s authorization, you can get edible medical marijuana products, but they’ll cost you a bit more than they would elsewhere. That’s because the state adds a 7% Meal Tax on edibles.
The Only Way to Roll: According to the California Bureau of Cannabis Control Requirements for the Transportation of Cannabis Goods, it is illegal to transport any cannabis product by way of an aircraft, watercraft, drone, rail, human-powered vehicle, or unmanned vehicle. That’s right, it is illegal for cannabis businesses to transport marijuana by skateboard in California, or pretty much anything other than “inside of a vehicle or trailer” — and it cannot be visible from the outside.
No Fancy Stuff: In Nevada and some other states, marijuana signage can only have two fonts and neither can be decorative or appeal to minors. San serif fonts are preferred.
Watch your Ps, Qs, and Hs: In Michigan, the plant was spelled “marihuana” in their 1937 tax act, so the state decided to keep things consistent. You can find this spelling even in modern legislation like the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act, passed in 2008.
Look for the Signs: In Oregon, dispensary signage rules state that only Times New Roman or Arial fonts are allowed, and they must be bold and 80-point in size. Absolutely no other choices are allowed.
No Funny Business: In Massachusetts, dispensaries aren’t allowed to produce or sell novelty or promotional items including t-shirts.
The Best Gifts are Hand-Picked: Another odd law in Massachusetts says that you can’t “gift” marijuana in exchange for later payment.
Peek-A-Boo! Where ARE You? Arizona has a number of medical marijuana dispensaries but it’s difficult to find them. That’s because the state won’t share the licensed dispensary list with anyone except current medical marijuana patients of the state. In addition, the dispensaries have to pay large fees if they move or change their business name.
You may wonder if these laws are really enforceable. Any law that’s on the books is enforceable, no matter how weird it is. It’s also important to note that marijuana laws are continually evolving, and what may seem unusual or peculiar today could change in the future.
