I am an experienced aesthetic nurse who must keep my face on top of the game. Thus I am not a stranger to being in my clients’ shoes and always follow the latest cosmetic trends. Recently, I’ve got injections of Botox and would like to share my experience. Choosing a Healthcare Provider

The very first thing you should pay attention to is the qualification and experience of the healthcare provider. Only a physician, physician assistant, dentist, aesthetic nurse, or another licensed practitioner can administer Botox injections. You can also request to check the certification to ensure a specialist has completed training.

Another aspect you need to consider is the cosmetic appearance of your healthcare practitioner. This is especially crucial for those who want to get natural-looking results. A specialist with overfilled or frozen face has probably developed a professional deformity. This can affect the results of his or her work.

Next, you should check the social media of the clinic, spa, or specific aesthetician. The Instagram popularity of some beauty specialists may be the result of good photoshop. To avoid falling for the facetune trick, look for video content on the page because it is too complicated and time-consuming to fake.

Botox Treatment

Initial Consultation

When you come to the medical office for the very first time, you should get an initial consultation. The specialist will ask you about your state of health and previous cosmetic treatments. You’ll also get an assessment of your skin – whether it is age-appropriate or not to do a specific procedure, what changes already exist, and what you may expect in the future.

Don’t be afraid to tell in detail the whole history of your interaction with the beauty industry. The more information you provide, the better result you will get. At the end of the consultation, the provider captures your face for photo protocol, draws up a treatment strategy, and gives detailed recommendations for home skin care. Usually, it takes about 30 minutes and can be combined with the procedure.

Procedure Itself

At the beginning of the procedure, the healthcare provider asks you to sit down in a chair in a reclining position. The specialist removes your makeup from the injection sites and swabs these areas with alcohol. Afterward, you’ll make several facial expressions to understand the muscles’ location and tension level. The healthcare provider marks up the injection points and then administers the medication.

Right after the procedure, you may have some mild redness and swelling at each insertion site, especially if you had aspirin or Ibuprofen the week before the treatment. It’s normal and goes away within an hour. The healthcare practitioner provides you with recommendations that you must strictly follow to get a perfect result. I emphasized this point because Botulinum Toxin medication doesn’t work immediately, and it needs time to settle.

Botox Forehead Before and After

Here I am and my result of the botulinum toxin injections. I entrusted my face to my old friend, who has been working in the beauty industry for a long time. When I came to her office, she asked me to choose between four different medications – Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. For those who don’t know, I would like to clarify that Botox is just a trading name of the very first registered drug, and it is often used interchangeably for other neurotoxin products.

Well, I preferred the Dysport just because it usually worked best for my face and lasted longer than others (read the article – “How Long Does Botox Last?”). This is not an advertisement, and I don’t want to drag you into the Dysport camp. All botulinum toxin medications work in similar ways but have some distinctive features. Moreover, their effect often depends on the work of the individual excretory system, meaning the same neurotoxin drug can work in a specific way for different people. All in all, you should consult with your healthcare provider to choose an appropriate treatment.

Any botulinum toxin treatment is measured in units, and for each client, the number of units will depend on the face’s structure and the muscles’ activity. Keep in my mind that Dysport is more diluted than other toxin medications. One unit of Botox, Xeomin, or Jeuveau equals three units of Dysport. To smooth out wrinkles on the forehead, the healthcare provider administers 20-100 units of Dysport or 10-30 units of other botulinum toxin drugs. In my case, I got 36 units of Dysport in my forehead, which might sound too little, but I requested to keep my mimic alive. In a picture, you can see the result of the treatment after two weeks. I came in for a follow-up appointment to add a little more toxin to correct the lateral lines above my eyebrows. It is absolutely normal practice for this procedure because our muscles may work asymmetrically, or one of the sides of the face may be less sensitive to the drug. Moreover, Botox needs time to settle and fully show the effect. Overall, this is one of the safest cosmetic treatments that can effectively combat signs of aging.
