Hair transplantation for women suffering from hair loss, receding hairline and high forehead

Women who suffer from genetic Hair loss can also think about a hair transplant. When we think of hair loss, we often think exclusively of men. But women also frequently suffer from hair loss and receding hairlines. Some have a higher forehead from birth and are often affected by the typical hereditary (androgenetic) hair loss. In the same way, there is no reason for the female gender to resign themselves to a thinning hairstyle or living with receding hairlines. Learn more in this guide about how hair transplantation with the FUE procedure or the FUT strip hair transplant technique can provide fuller hair, reduce corners and even a high forehead, the dangers of this procedure and the cost of hair transplantation.

General information about hair loss in women

Most hair loss is genetic, but diseases (e.g. thyroid disease, diabetes, etc.) and hormonal changes can also be the cause. Ultimately, the hair tends to thin and fall out or become “sparse” or “thinner”, as the German magazine “Apotheken-Rundschau” also states about hair loss in women.

In contrast to men, however, hair loss in women tends to follow the so-called “Ludwig course” (Ludwig scale). The first signs of hair loss are typically found in the crown area above the ears or at the hairline of the forehead. In most cases, medicinal treatment of androgenetic hair loss can help, e.g. dermatologists often prescribe the active ingredient minoxidil. If this has no effect, you can hope for help through a hair transplant! In this situation, the process of planning and implementation varies, but in some cases, greater hair density can lead to an aesthetically pleasing result. Moreover, the results can be just as convincing as in men.

The causes of hair loss in the females are extremely complex and usually require an investigative approach to determine the cause of the problem.

Overview of the causes of hair loss in the female sex:

  • Skin diseases
  • Iron deficiency
  • Thyroid problems
  • Psychological stress
  • Taking medication
  • Changes in hormones

The reason why more women choose treatment with the FUE or FUT technique

Especially for female patients, appearance is usually an important factor. One of the most important factors in looking attractive is full and strong hair. A magnificent and full head of hair symbolises female attractiveness. With androgenetic hair loss, not only the hair disappears, but also a symbol of beauty and feminine grace and attractiveness, which is the main reason to think about own hair transplantation.

The good news is:

Of course, “woman” can also have a hair transplant and hair thickening.

The precondition for this is a confirmed diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia (hereditary hair loss, also called AGA) and a healthy hair crown.

Surgical procedures to remove the inherited receding hairline, to reduce the hairline or to surgically thicken the hair.

If the diagnosis of androgenetic alopecia has been confirmed and there are enough hair follicles, hair transplantation is also possible in women.

In a surgical hair transplant, the hair follicles are “grafted” in one of two ways: either into the existing thinning areas to visually thicken them, or into areas that are completely bald, such as in a transplant to reduce the corners of a receding hairline or to lower a high forehead.

In any case, it is because the hair follicles of the hair ring are immune to harmful male hormones that gradually cause damage to the hair root. The transplanted hair follicles retain this sensitivity in the new location and do not fall out again. The transplanted hair follicles therefore continue to grow for the rest of their lives after the procedure and never fall out again (provided one does not develop any health problems that could lead to hair loss, or hair loss due to taking medication, etc.).

Risks of hair transplantation for women

Botched women’s hair transplants: If the procedure is performed by inexperienced doctors, the risks are lack of density, unsightly multiple grafts in the hairline and grafts growing in the wrong direction of growth

In general, it also applies to hair transplantation for women and men that only a single hair graft (1 hair graft) may be used for the front area on the first mm. Many female patients who are not affected by hereditary hair loss typically have naturally fine hair loss in the front area, near the beginning of the hairline, which unfortunately cannot be remedied by hair transplants!

A reputable and sufficiently experienced hair transplant specialist will ensure that he only transplants single hair grafts in the front rows. However, this just does not change the hair thickness aspect of the grafts, which come from the solid crown of hair that is healthy and has the normal hair thickness. Even though thin down, which normally occurs in women, cannot be replicated with hair transplants, the results of highly skilled hair surgeons are extremely lifelike and most clients are satisfied with the results. When choosing a hair specialist, it is important to make sure that he or she has sufficient experience in dealing with female hairlines.

Reduce the high forehead with a SHA procedure and/or pull the hairline forward with hair surgery.

Elimination of a high forehead in women: Case study of a procedure with SHA (surgical forehead reduction) and combination with hair transplantation using the strip method. A total of 1790 grafts were transplanted
This woman’s high forehead was visibly reduced by a combination of a surgical procedure (SHA) with a FUT hair transplant (strip technique) and 1790 grafts. The hairline now sits much lower.

Even if you as a woman do not suffer from hair loss and “only” want to reduce the appearance of your forehead by reducing the hairline with a hair implant, this is possible.

If you have a large forehead, there is the option of a traditional hair transplant, but it is also possible to have a surgical procedure to move the hairline and thereby lower the forehead. This procedure is known as Surgical Hairline Advancement SHA.

In the SHA procedure, a single step allows the hairline of the eyebrow to be moved to 1.5 or 5 centimetres through a trichophytic (hairline) incision. The hairline is advanced, which allows the removal of the brow skin, reducing the overall height of the brow. The extent of the reduction and the almost immediate effect, as well as the thickness of the advanced hairline and the possibility of aesthetically raising the eyebrows if desired, are in contrast to hair transplants, as you can read in the English report “Lowering the hairline of females with two options” by Jeffrey Epstein and Ashlin Alexander.

This procedure was first introduced in the late 1970s by the physician Dr Sheldon Kabaker, see the English publication “Correction of the hairline in females”. But fewer and fewer hair surgeons are aware of this procedure, perhaps because of the success of follicular unit transplantation and the move towards minimal surgery as described in the book “Lowering the hairline on females within only two minutes” by Mario Marzola, in which the author also reports on the SHA procedure.

According to Dr Jeffrey Epstein and Dr Ashlin Alexander from New York, USA, to be a suitable candidate, the patient should have adequate scalp mobility, good frontal hair density and no evidence of previous scalp surgery, such as an ear lift, which can hinder the healing process. A healthy front hairline is a must, as hair loss over time can expose the scar from the incision along the hairline. In addition, these hair follicles, which are unstable along the hairline, are particularly susceptible to shock loss, diminishing the gains made by advancement.

A hair transplant for women without shaving for a quick restoration of social skills. This procedure is also known as the “Unshaved Method”.

Hair transplantation without shaving for women

Especially for those who spend a lot of time in company, it is difficult to comprehend the need to cut off large amounts of hair from the head. After all, hair only grows 1 centimetre per month. If the hair is cut to 1 millimetre, it takes 2 years to grow to 24 centimetres. Most people do not know that there is a method that does not require shaving, called the “Unshaved Method”. This is an FUE method that does not require shaving of the existing hair in the recipient and harvesting area.

This method (FUE without any shaving) is offered even by very few hair surgeons worldwide, for example by Dr. John Cole in Atlanta, USA, but also by Dr. Patrick Mwamba in Brussels, Belgium and Dr. Feriduni in Hasselt, Belgium offers to leave the hair long in the reception area and to work with partial shaving only in the donor area.

The methods: Comparison of the FUE and FUT methods

Currently, there are two methods that have been adapted to current standards in recent years. They differ mainly in the removal technique.

  • In the FUT method, the hair follicles are taken in a thin strip of skin from the back of the scalp and then distributed under the microscope. When a whole section of skin is removed, 2000 to 4000 hair grafts (or many more, depending on the elasticity of the scalp) are taken at once, as required. The resulting wound on the back of the scalp is then surgically closed.
  • In the FUE (single unit extraction) method, the hair roots are taken one by one from the donor area and then divided into grafts of 4 to 5 hairs, which are then transplanted into the thinned areas. Since the hair roots are taken one by one, this procedure takes more time. In addition, shaving is often required, at least in the donor area, which can be uncomfortable for many patients.

The costs also depend on the size of the area and the number of grafts for a hair transplant for women

The final cost and price of hair transplantation for women also depends not only on the specific technique (whether FUE or FUT (strip surgery)) and clinic, but also on the number of grafts needed, which depends on the following aspects, among others:

  • What are my individual goals as a woman?Wie lang/tief soll mein Haaransatz werden?
  • How large is the area that will receive new hair? Is it only concealed hair angles or is it about reducing a complete hairline or perhaps thickening larger areas?
  • How much density can be achieved?
  • The number of “transplanted” grafts depends on the characteristics of the donor hair. These are the amount of hair in the “ring of hair” as well as the diameter of the hair shaft, the hair color (the difference between the scalp and the hair) and whether the hair is curly, straight or wavy.

Examples of costs per transplant/graft depending on the transplant procedure

For a hair transplant with the strip technique (FUT), depending on the number of grafts and country:

Starting from 1.50 Euro per graft (e.g. Cyprus, Turkey), otherwise up to 3.50 Euro per graft/transplants

For hair transplantation with the FUE procedure, depending on the number of grafts and country:

From 1.50 euros per graft (e.g. Cyprus, Turkey), otherwise up to 5 euros per graft/transplants
