How to quickly fix a Haglund’s deformity

Haglund’s deformity is a lump at the back of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon inserts into the bone that can get painful with pressure from the footwear.

As a Haglund’s deformity is due to an enlargement of the bone, there is not really a quick way to get rid of it. There are, however, some things that you can do to get rid of the pain quickly:

  1. Stop wearing shoes that are closed in at the back. Get into open heel shoes. Any shoes that do not put pressure on the back of the heel can be helpful. If you have to wear shoes that are closed in at the heel, then look for shoe that have a very flimsy heel counter.
  2. Felt padding. Sheets of adhesive podiatry felt can be used to cut out pads that are shaped like a horseshoe or round like a donut with a hole in the middle are a pretty good way to quickly help with the pain of a Haglund’s deformity.
  3. If it is particularly painful and swollen, then that is probably because there is a bursitis on top of the bony lump of the Haglunds deformity. As well as the felt padding, ice and even a cortisone injection might be considered.

Once the “acuteness” has gone out of a Haglund’s deformity with the adhesive podiatry felt and better fitting shoes, a silicone gel protector can be used under the socks to reduce the friction between the shoe and the bony enlargement.

There is not really a quick way to deal with a Haglunds deformity and the pain and swelling that goes with it. There are some things that can be done to reduce the pain reasonably quickly.
